Para-Medic Unit
Interest Sought
Robert Howard Chrlstcnian-
scn, acting personnel officer
for the Medford squadron,
Civil Air Patrol, is attempt
ing to establish a para-medic
unit here.
Unit members would jump
on rescue missions for down
planer, particularly in inac
cessible areas where lives
might be saved due to the
less time required in reach
ing injured victims.
Christcniansen said that he
Is personally trying to estab
lishing the unit which he
hopes will eventually be a
unit ot the CAP here.
Persons in the unit would
have to be experienced para
chute jumpers and be trained
in advanced first aid. There
is no other CAP units like it
in the United States Christ

He added that jumpers
would have to have about six
weeks training in jumping in
rough terrain.

797 Ballots Said
To Be Missing
In Cook County
Chicago -IIJPII- Cook county
politicians peered into two
empty ballot boxes today for
a clue to alleged vote scandals
that could leave Illinois out
of the Electoral College.
At least 707 ballots cast in
two far South Side precincts
were missing in a "discovery"
recheck of Nov. 8 county vot
ing. They included 628 mark
ed for Sen. John F. Kennedy
and 169 for Vice President
Richard M. Nixon.
In the 86th Precincts of the
9th Ward, Kennedy beat Nix
on 369 to 77. In the 56th Pre
cinct of the 10th Ward, Ken
nedy won, 259 to 92.
Nixon i Gain Small
The boxes were opened
Monday as three dozen teams
conducted the Republican-financed
recheck of Kennedy's
lopsided county victory that
helped the Democratic president-elect
win the state's hotly-contested
popular vote.
So far . Nixon has gained
fewer that; one vote per pre
cinct. He needs a per-prccinct
average of 10 votes in 906
county paper ballot precincts
if the GOP hopes to use Cook
county to overturn Kennedy's
8,656 statewide margin.
Chairman Sidney Holzman
of the election commission
said he didn't know where
the missing ballots were. An
other commission spokesman
said they might turn up in
a box of unused ballots and
other election supplies.
Need Court Order
The "discovery" re-check
has little more than publicity
value, since official election
board figures will stand un
changed unless a court orders
a recount.
The empty ballot boxes,
latest in a series of quirks
in the Cook county vote, were
sure to come to the attention
of the GOP-dominated Illi
nois electoral board which
was preparing to meet again
at Springfield.
The board, headed by de
feated GOP Gov. William G.
Stratton, last week threatened
to leave Illinois' vote uncerti
fied, thus leaving the state's
27-vote bloc out of Electoral
College counting.
Democrats have said a
mandamas suit could force
certification of Illinois' votes,
and Democratic electors gen
erally expected their votes to
count. i
Public Responds
With Car Reports
Portland OJPD The sheriff's
office said today it had so
many reports on red or ma
roon cars in connection with
the investigation into the dis
appearance of a coed and the
slaying of her boy friend that
it assigned one clerk to a full
job of classifying them.
An all-points bulletin was
put out earlier asking for in

ported seen In the vicinity
where Larry Ralph Peyton,
19, was slain and Beverly Ann
Allan, sophomore at Washing
ton Slate University, was ab
ducted more than a week ago.
"The public response has
been wonderful," said Capt
Gordon Auborn, chief of Mult
nomah .county detectives.
"There is tremendous interest
in this case. It is cases like
these which the public often
helps break."
However, authorities re
ported no new promising lead.
The girl's parents, Mr, and
Mrs. Robert Allan, Monday
returned to their home at
Port Townsend, Wash.
from Chief Warrant Officer
Mary Hall at SPring 3-3505.
Those Interested may attend
a CAP meeting next Monday
at 7:30 p.m. at the squadron's
hall at the Medford airport.
