Win Sweepstakes Award
At Speech Tournament
Medford High school speech
students returned victoriously
early Sunday morning from
the annual Pacific University
high school speech tournament
in Forest Grove.

coach, announced today the
winning of two trophies, sev
eral top winners, and numer
ous finalists. Some 24 high
school speakers made the
three-day trip.
The students left by char
tered bus Thursday afternoon
with several debators from
Ashland High school and their
Rebate coach, Herb Lewis.
Tavlor accompanied the dele
gation.. Participants competed
in debate; extemporaneous
speaking, oratory, and serious
and humorous interpretative
speaking.
State GOP Picks

Yturri (R.-Ontario) and Rep.
F. F. Montgomery (R-Eugene)
will provide the Republican
leadership at the 1961 Oregon
legislature. ;
Yturri and Montgomery
were chosen here Saturday at
separate Republican caucuses
as minority leaders, respec
tively, in the Senate and
House.
Montgomery was unani
mously selected over Rep,
Harry C. Elliott (R-Tillamook)
and Yturri was unopposed for
reelection.

of all speaking events are to
be released by Professor A. C.
Hingston, tourney director,
later this week. Hingston said
Saturday that some 595 stu
dents from 40 Oregon high
schools competed in the 15th
annual contest.

Last year India converted
its monetary system to the
decimal system. South Africa
changes in February. New
Zealand expects to drop its
pounds, shillings and pence
system by 1964. There is even
talk of Australia following
suit at a not too distant date.
WHY these changes?
The answer is simple.
These countries have imme
morial!)' been usiug the ster
ling system (known rather
generally as the English sys
tem) which has three basic
monetary units-the pound,
the shilling and the penny.
A pound sterling equals 20
shillings. A shilling equals 12
pennies-or pence ra the plural.
They're used to it, and hate
to change. But-
This system involves a lot
of complication in the way of
addition and subtraction when
you make a purchase, tender
more money than your pur
chase comes to and then
start to figure out how much
change you have coming.
T70R example:
you're visiting
London - as all Americans
hope to do. Suppose you go
into one of the big London
stores and make a purchase
amounting to 40 pounds, 12
shillings and 8 pence. Suppose
you tender a 50 pound note
in payment. Naturally, you
want to know if you're getting
back the right change. So
you start to s u b t r a ct 40
pounds, 12 shillings and 8
pence from 50 pounds. If you
put it down on paper, here is
how your problem will look;

Your job is to subtract the
smaller sum (the amount of
your purchase) from the larg
er sum (the amount of money
you tendered). In this illus
tration, the L stands 'for
pounds, the S for shillings and
the P for pence.

O far, it all looks
simple
enough. But hold
your
breath.
You ain't seen nothin' yet.
XTATURALYY enough, you
-l' start in at the right hand
side, subtracting the 8 from
the 0. Being an American,
your thought is to borrow
ONE from' the figure to the
left, In the shilling column.
Under the sterling system,
that CAN'T BE DONE. You
can't borrow just one penny.
You have to borrow a
WHOLE SHILLING. So you
borrow one from the number
of shillings. There are 12
pence in a shilling. So you
put the 12 pence in the pence
column. You then subtract 8
pence from 12 pence, leaving
4 pence.
With that out of the way,
you move over to the middle
column. You can't subtract 12
from 0, so again you have to
borrow. You have to borrow
a whole pound from the
pound column and there are
20 shillings in a pound. BUT
you've already used ONE
shilling in your pence column,
so you put down 19 shillings
in your middle column. That
leaves only 49 pounds.
DO . . . your final problem,
as you have put it down
on paper, will look like this
after you have made your
final subtraction: :

' ' You s h o uld get nine
pounds, seven shillings and
fourpence in change. If you
want to prove you problem,
to assure yourself you haven't
been gypped, you can add the
amount of your change to the
amount of your purchase and
if everything is on the up and
up the total you get will ex
actly balance the 50 pound
note you tendered in payment.
But, by this time, the
chances are, it's TEA TIME.
And, besides, your head is go
ing round and round after
your bout with the change fig
ures. So you shove the nine
quid, seven and fourpence into
your pocket and hope for the
best.

anwser is that the British are
strong on tradition and the

As Substitute

men tempted to reach for a
cigarette to ease the worries
of everyday life were advised
today to reach instead for a
blonde, or a brunette.
The suggestion came from
a British medical expert who
said that in his opinion there
was nothing like a flirtation
for taking a man's mind off
his routine troubles.
Dr. Alistair MacKinnon, 45,
father of fvie children, offer
ed his "don't smoke flirt"
theory in an article in the
medical cagazine, The Practi
tioner.
Seeker Healthier Vice
In the article. Dr. MacKin
non took the view that if mid
dle-aged men must have a
minor voice" they should try
to find a healthier one than
smoking for example, a light
romance.
'I wouldn't suggest flirta
tion as an alternative to smok
ing for younger men, he said.
That could be dangerous.
Youth, he went on, could
take up chess, or drink beer
or engage in a series of "pla
tonic" friendships, preferably

will be held in Grants Pass
Monday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m.

The group first met Nov. 29.

But Gets His Man

he was bitten on the seat
of the pants by the man he
arrested Sunday night.
Hale came upon Robin

would do if her husband gave
up his cigarettes in favor of
flirtations.

Severe Storms Lash
London - WPD - Britain and
Europe staggered under the
impact of violent prewinter
storms today and prepared for
worse to come.
Reports indicated that at
least six persons were killed
as a result of the storm - two
in England and four inA Hol
land. Sixty - mile an hour gales
with torrential rains swept
coastal regions from France
to Scandinavia over the week
end and roared eastward as
far-, as Austria.
In Britain, it was regarded
as one of the worst storms on
record. In some places floods
were the most devastating in
more than a century.
Bartender Forced
To Give Drinks

county sheriff's deputies said
an armed man Sunday claim
ed to be Johnny Yuma, a tele
vision personality, and forced
the bartender at Shorty s tav
ern here to give drinks on
the house for 30 minutes be
fore he was overpowered.
John Marvin Johnson, 32
Silverton, was arrested on
charges of drunkenness and
disorderly conduct.
Although no one was hurt
officers said the man fired
shots into the ceiling and
floor.
The bartender, Edward
Buchheit, finally was able to
hit the man on the head with
a club and other patrons grab

Hiroshima Plane
Pilot Missing
Waco, Tex. -HIPD- Claude R.
Eatherly, 41, troubled by a
guilt complex since he flew
the reconnaisance plane which
led the dropping of the first
atomic bomb over Hiroshima,
has been missing from the Vet
erans Administration Hospital
in Waco since Oct. 22, hospital
officials said today.
Dr. George T. McMahan of
the VA hospital said Eather-
ly's presence in the hospital
was voluntary, although he
wasn't supposed to leave with
out permission.
"We can't do anything
about getting him back," Mc
Mahan said. "He should not
have left without permission,
but his status at the hospital
was that he could leave any
time. He was just supposed to
report to us that he was going
to do so."
McMahon said Eatherly's
brother, Joe, who lives in Van
Alstyne, Tex., had been noti
fied that Eatherly was gone
from the hospital.
Eatherly, who was a majcr,
piloted a B29 observation
plane and it was his respon
sibility to designate a target
for the bombing plane, Enola
Gay, to drop her A-bomb pay
load on.

Ruby Arlean Bechtel, 35
of route 1, box 371, Talent,
suffered a possible ankle in
jury during a collision on the
South Pacific highway in
front ol the Bear Creek or
chards south, parking lot. She
was. treated by a local doctor.

on the Green Springs highway
when a car driven by Henry
George Buzza, 49, Klamath
Falls Star route, Ashland,
started to make a left turn
and was hit by a car driven
by William Louise Poole, 23,
of 925 Siskiyou blvd., Ashland.
