the downturn would be "only

put of goods and services.
Spendable income of indi

less," he predicted. B u t he
said, "unemployment is likely
to average higher than In 1960

prediction at the chamber's
annual business outlook con
ference. Schmidt was optimistic but
cautious about the second half
of 1061. He said the national
production rate might hit $915
billion to $520 billion by the
end of the year if business
firms completed their inven
tory' cutbacks by summer.
This would be higher than in
1960.
Strength Surprising
Pinching the economy,
Schmidt said, were Inventory
retrenchment, a shift in the
federal budget from a 1959
deficit to a 1960 surplus, loss
of gold and dollars to foreign
countries and lack of growth
In the money supply.
"In the face of these obsta
cles, the strength and level of
the economy are surprising,"
Schmidt said.
Schmidt, emphasizing that
the downturn in business
would be "mild" and tempo
rary, said 1961 as a whole
should exceed 1960 in total
business volume. "There is at
present no ground for sustain
ed pessimism," he said.

Shift of Some 11, 000 Votes in Four States Could Have Put
Richard Nixon in White House, Republican Election Autopsy Shows
Washington-IUPB - The first
Republican, autopsy on the
presidential' election shows
that a shift of some 11,000
votes in &iur states could have
put Vice President Richard
M. Nixon in the White House.
The states are Illinois, wi,h
its 27 electoral votes, Missouri
with 13, New, Mexico with 4
andn Nevada with 3. Nixon
would have carried all four
states if he- had received a
vote ih each precinct from just
one person who voted for Sen.
John F. Kennedy. Each' of
these states is among those in
which GOP National Head
quarters has pressed for re
counts or investigations of al
leged voting irregularities,
i Nixon won 223 electoral
votes in the Nov. 8 election.
If he had carried Illinois, Mis
souri, New Mexico and Ne
vada, his electoral vote would
have been 270, one more than
t4e necessary majority.
Final and official results
show Kennedy carried Mis
souri by 9,878 votes, Nevada
by 2,493 and New Mixico by
2,294. His margin was less
than 9,000 in the unofficial
count in Illinois, where the
GOP is. still baftling to re
verse the result.
A preliminary study by the
research division of the Re
publican National Committee
emphasized major shifts away
from the Republicans in the
big cities and their suburbs
and among Catholic voters.
