life of their
mother, or
child, or their
husband. Just
Dr. Alvarez now a mother
whose daughter committed
suicide in a spell of depres
sion was telling me how up
set she still is, trying to fig
ure out how she could have
saved the daughter. She
thinks! perhaps she might
have, if she had not brought
the girl home so soon from
the mental hospital. But how
can anyone tell?
Here is another women who
is all upset much of the time,
wondering if, when her hus
band's bowel became ob
structed, she should have got
ten another surgeon to op
erate, or should have rushed
him to a big clinic. If she had
done that, would he be alive
today? Who knows?
Here on my desk Is a letter
from a much-distressed worn
an who cannot rest because, a
while ago, her old mother,
over 70 and with a high blood
pressure, had a big stroke.
Her doctor, I think very wise
ly, let her remain in her own
bed. There she did so well
that in a couple of weeks the
doctor let her be wheeled
out into the garden. That
night she had another worse
stroke, and this time the
doctor rushed her Into the
hospital, where In a few hours
she was dead. Now the daugh
ter is not only much upset,
blaming herself, and trying
to figure out how she could
have saved her mother's life,
but she Is embroiled in con
stant arguments with her
others who criticize her.
and maintain that, first, she
should never have let her
mother cat so much as to get
stout; second, she shouldn t
have let her mother get out
of bed so soon after the first
stroke: third, with the second
stroke, she shouldn't have let
the doctor take the n?other to
the hospital; fourth, that last
evening she shouldn't have
let the doctor go home and
leave their mother alone: and
fifth, the mother should have

at the end.
As I tell such women: In
the first place, who could
ever know if any conceivable
treatment could have saved
the loved one? My belief is
that, In this case, the mother
would have died of the two
big strokes, no matter what
had been done. Second, the
daughter should remember
that she had a fine experi
enced doctor in charge, and
the decisions were for him to
make not for her. Finally,
what good can it do now to
worry and fret and keep talk
ing over the problem? By
constantly fretting, the wom
an certainly does her dead
mother no good, and she is
making life miserable for her
poor husband and her chil
dren. Why not think of them
a bit?
There is another thought
that comes to me in regard to
some of these cases. Once a
relative dear to me had such
a bad stroke that she wgjs par
tially paralyzed and for a
while could not say a word.
She recovered, and with good
care lived on for seven or
eight years. But oh! at what
a price. All through those
years she suffered terribly
from a horrible feeling in her
head: a misery that' she could
not describe, but which made
life a heavy burden to her.
During those years she kept
asking me how much longer
I thought her suffering would
have to be. Unfortunately, her
doctors were unabft to find
any sedative that would give
her any relief from her men
tal and physical misery. It is
my experienje with hundreds
of cases like this that causes
me to say to a woman like the
one who is now worrying so
terribly, "perhaps your moth
er was very fortunate to go so
quickly and easily when her
Lord called her. Perhaps you
should be thankful."
I do not know how many
times In this column I have
written about shingles, but
seeing that every week, in
come many letters from
people who are suffering from
this disease, I see that I must
mention it again. By herpes
we physicians generally mean
a line of little blisters that
follow the course of a nerve.
This nerve may be on the face
and then, rarely, the blisters
will run over the eyeball and

a bad cold the blisters are on
the upper lip. If they follow
one of the nerves that runs
between two ribs, the disease
is called shingles or herpes
zoster. Usually there is some
burning pain with the
blisters.
In young persons the dis
ease usually clears up quick
ly without treatment, but in
the cases of elderly persons it
can be a serious business
causing great pain and dis
ability, perhapB for months.
The cause is a virus which
experts say is the same one
