Oregon Banks Plan
To Close Saturdays
Portland - Oregonlans will
not be able to bank in the
tate on Saturdays beginning
next Jan. 21.
An announcement of a five
day weekly schedule was
made Friday by Harold A

the Oregon Bankers associa

New Antisubmarine
Weapon Is Revealed
San Francisco - (WD - Con
struction of a modern anti-
submarine weapon designed
to replace the more tradition
al depth charge was revealed
Friday at the national confer
ence of the Naval Reserve as
sociation here.
It is a rocket-torpedo that
flies to the target area and
then submerges. The weapon
is called ASROC. It has a
range of eight miles.
Details about the new wea
pon were made public by a
spokesman of Libracope di
vision of General Precision
Inc., makers of the shipboard
computer system by which
the rocket-missile is aimed.
He said the ASROC system
completed its final tests in
June and will be installed
aboard 150 of the Navy's anti-
sub hunter-killer subs at a
total cost of about $270 mil
lion, it was disclosed.
J. C. Penney Store
Robbed in Portland
Portland - (UPll-An armed
man held up the layaway de
partment of the J. C. Penney
downtown department store
here Friday night.
He escaped with $225. Store
officials said it was the first
time the downtown branch
had been held up in its his
tory.
The layaway department
clerk said the man, believed
to have had a .38 caliber re
volver, used the elevator for
his getaway. The clerk des
cribed the man as about 5-11
and 200 pounds.
About 200 Attend
Senior Class Play
Happy Camp - Approxi
mately 200 people attended
the senior class play held at
the Happy Camp gym Nov. 15.
Mrs. Barbara Hamilton di
rected the play. The play ap
propriately titled "Lights
Out" was a three-act mystery
comedy. The cast would in
variably build up the audience
to a high point of mystery and
then out would go the lights
followed by screams. Donald
Scndck, acting the part of
Neil Parker, tried to deter
mine if a murder had been
committed and by whom, fol
lowing the disappearance of
Helen Frceland, portrayed by
Diane westby.
The final act showed thai
a murder had not been com
mitted at all and was just a
gas to scare the maid, Ella
Tucker, played by Mary Jo
Hockaday into marrying the
handyman, Benny King, por
trayed by Mike Fitzgerald.
Others in the play were
Patsy Poe, Diane Grey, David
McGinly, Jeannie Huddleston,
Gaylon Lee, Georgia Stanford
and Tom Anderson.
Mrs. Hamilton wished to
thank Pat Payne and Basil
Kirby, both seniors, for their
time and effort in building the
stage sets and taking care of
the curtain and the lights.
NIXON INCREASES LEAD

President Richard M.
Nixon's lead in Ca'ifornia in
creased Saturday to 20.531
votes. With about 5.000 ab
sentee votes still uncounted
in San Diego county, and a
handful uncounted in Placer
county, Nixon had 148,219
absentee votes and President
elect John F. Kennedy had
94,019. The overall statewide
totals were: Nixon 3,238.519,
Kennedy 3,217,988.
