WILMA LaVERNE COOK
Private funeral services will
be held Friday at 1 p.m. at
the Chapel in the Trees Mor
tuary, in Siskiyou Memoral
park, for Mrs. Wilma La
Verne Cook, 53, of 1222 West
10th St., Medford, who died
Tuesday at her home. The
Rev. William McLeod of Sa
cread Heart Catholic church
will officiate. Entombment
will be in Siskiyou Memorial
Mausoleum.
Mrs. Cook was born July
14, 1907, in Perrydale. On
June 18, 1938, in Medford,
she was married to Fred
Cook, who preceded her in
death in 1953. Mrs. Cook had
been a resident of Oregon all
of her life and had lived in
the valley since 1935.
Until her recent illness she
was employed as bookkeeper
for Rich Plan of Southern
Oregon, Inc., Medford.
Survivors include one sis
ter, Mrs. W. R. Coffeen, Sac
ramento, Calif., and one
nephew, W. B. Coffeen, also
of Sacramento.
Siskiyou Funeral Service
director's of Chapel in the
Trees Mortuary, are in charge

lead, researchers reported at
the American Dietetic Asso
ciation meeting here.

Thompson, R. Moore and G.
D. Whcdon of the National
Institute of Arthritis and
Metabolic Diseases, Bcthcsda,
Md., studied the metabolism
of four obese women main
tained on 650 to 1,000 calories
per day. They found that it
was easier for them to walk
on a treadmill while wearing
lead vests than to walk while
carrying the same weight in
excess fat.
During the walking period
the energy exerted and the
calories burned up are in
creased. But for the remain
der of the day, in heavy per
sons, less energy than usual
is used. Thus the total cal
aries used by the body dur
ing the whole day is less than
if no walking is done.
Studies of one obese indi
vidual subjected to cold also
showed that about 50 per
cent less energy is used by the
fat than the thin in respond
ing to cold.
New Drugs Treat

tlenls with high blood pros

Patients with severe and
moderately severe cases were
given combinations of the
tranquilizer reserpine with
each of three nerve-blocking
drugs-mccamylamine, chlori-
sondamine and pcntolinium
tartrate. All three were about
equally effective in produc
ing significant reductions in
blood pressure.
But undesirable reactions
varied slightly, producing
slightly more dryness of
mouth and bladder difficulty
with mccamylamine than the
other two drugs. Chlorisonda
mine treatment caused some
visual disturbance.

Woman Arrested
For Shoplifting
Medford police took Roma
Gcraldcane Clark, 38, of 375
South Central ave., into cus
tody Wednesday on a charge
of petty larceny after the
woman was allegedly seen
shoplifting several items from
a local super market.
A citizen's complaint charg
ing Mrs. Clark with petty lar
ceny was signed by the store
manager who said he appre
hended the woman outside of
the store with the stolen
goods.
Mrs. Clark entered a plea
of guilty to the charge in dis
trict court this morning and
was given a six month sus
pended jail sentence and
placed on informal court pro

Reported in City
Burglurs broke into the
Medford Gospel Mission and
a liamburKer restaurant early
mis morning but the loss in
both burglaries, according to
Medford police, was small.
Entry to the mission, lo
cated at 33 South Front St.,
was gained by breaking a
window, police said. The
burglar reportedly took a wal
let containing about $1 from
a man who was sleeping at
the mission.
The other burglary was at
Dell's Hamburgers, 323 East
Sixth St., where entry also
was gained by breaking a
window. Missing arc about
a half-dozen hamburgers and
an undetermined number of
cigarettes, police said.
Live Parasite Is
Used in Cattle

bat increasing parasitic infec
tions in cattle. Irradiation of
larvae by X-rays during ihe
molting period weakens but
docs not kill the parasites
Dr. Ernest J. L. Soulsby,
University of Cambridge, Eng
land, said that a heavy dose
of 60,000 roentgen units was
used to weaken the larvae so
that a live parasite vaccine
could be made.
The tiny larvae are like
minute worms, a third of a
millimeter in length and fine
fiftieth of a millimeter across
They are collected from the
excreta of infected cattle, then
irradiated before being put
into vaccine that is injected
into healthy cattle to prevent
infestation.
Vaccine Expensive
The vaccine is expensive,
Soulsby said, but a single
shot, double strength, is ef
fective, and costs the equiva
lent of about $3.50 in U. S.
money.
Parasitic bronchitis is es
pecially prevalent among Eng
lish cattle. This sets up an
irritation leading to pneumo
nia and secondary infections
that may be fatal.
Although it is possible to
work only with animals at
present on parasitic immunol
ogy, Soulsby said that not too
far in the future it would have
application for human beings.
In an interview preceding
his lecture, which was under
the auspices of American In
stitute of Biological Sciences,
Soulsby said there are com
mon parasitic cross-overs be
tween cats, dogs and humans.
Soulsby has just completed
a lecture series at universities
throughout the U, S., arrang
ed and administered by a Na
tional Science foundation
grant.
