discussed when Mrs. Doris
Prentiss of the Oregon slate
system of hifiher education,
the general extension division,
met recently with the faculty
of Southern Oregon college.
One of the numerous prob
lems involved in this effort
to get regular college credit
classes on a televised instruc
tion basis was given by Dr.
Reforestation Plan
Announced by State
Salem - The state refor
estation program for the com
ing winter contemplates the
planting of some million
trees and the seeding of some
11,350 pounds of Douglas fir
seed on state forest lands
managed by the slate forestry
department throughout Ore
gon. It is anticipated that the
project will cost about $205,
000. Some 4,675,000 of the tree
seedlings will be planted in
the Tillamook burn while 0,
500 pounds of tree seed arc
being aerial seeded in the
area. About 3,895,000 of these
seedlings will be plunled by
crews under the direction of
state forestry department per
sonnel and a 60-man parolee
crew which is available
through agreement with the
state penitentiary. The bulk
of the tree seed and about
780,000 tree seedlings will be
planted In the burn under
privcte contract.

direct broadcast range of the
two educational tele vision
stations operated by the gen
eral extension division and
which will serve the four
state schools in the upper val
ley region.
The only way this area
could become part of this di
rect broadcasting media would
be to obtain cable connec
tions, through the use of a
microwave transmission, or
by a translator system which
would connect the , operating
stations of the general exten
sion division with the com
mercial .station or a closed
circuit system, Dr. McGill
said.
Statewide Plans
Mrs. Prentiss recognized
that the GED is definitely
planning on servicing all state
schools. Currently. thos
schools outside the upper val
ley region can participate in
the direct broadcast ol the
general extension by delayed
means through which pro
grams are kinescoped and re
broadcast by the local stations
at an arranged time.
Southern Oregon college
personnel expressed a desire
to be a part of a television
instructional program, and
felt that such participation
should be on a current and
direct broadcast basis.
It is a future possibility
that certain classes may be
taught by television only.
These programs could bo pre
sented over the local station
or through a closed circuit
nn campus.
