footballers geared this week
to encounter Central of Mon
m o u t h-Independence in an
Oregon A-2 semifinal fray.
The teams meet at 8 p.m. Fri
day on the Phoenix turf.
Wiese's passing has been an
important part of Central's
wing T formation game. He
completed 83 of 147 aerial ef
forts during the regular sea
son of nine games for 1,345
yards. The quarterback also
was his club's leading rusher
with 552 yards on 117 carries.
Jinx End
Hoped for

his Oregon State Beavers
would end a jinx he has en
countered since he took over
as head man here.
Prothro has yet to beat an
Oregon team at Parker Sta
dium. In 1956, when Oregon
State won the Pacific Coast
conference crown, Oregon tied
the Beavers 14-14. In 1958,
with the game rated even, Or
egon won from OSC 20-0 here.
Oregon State has had equal
success at Eugene. Last season
the Beavers, with a 2-7 record,
downed Oregon 15-7 and in
1957 an underdog Oregon
State team won 10-7 on a field
goal by Ted Searle.
This season Oregon is 7-2
and Oreeon State 6-3.
Saturday's game will be the
64th between the two schools
Oregon has won 30, Oregon
State 25 and 8 games have
ended in ties.
Both teams continue to
work out in secret.

liard and Ron Miller, who
have been out of action with
injuries, are expected to be
ready Saturday.
Last week end McLoughlin
high of Milton-Freewater held
Wiese to four completions in
12 attempts and intercepted
two of his passes.' Mac high
limited him to 29 yards in
nine carries. But wiese s
mates, halfback Dick Wild-
fang and fullback Steve Rule
collected 62 and 63 respective
yardage totals and the Pan
thers overcame Mac 20 to 14
to emerge through the quar-J
terfmal round.
High in Ratings
It was Central's 10th tri
umph of the season against
not a single loss. This record
has gained the Panthers a tie
for first, a second place and a
third in the final rankings of
the polls.
Central's record includes
victories this fall over two
A-l schools, Sandy 40 to 0 and
Lebanon 20 to 7. In their
southern division of the Capi
tal conference they whipped
Stayton 32 to 7, Cascade 57
to 0, Canby 55 to 7 and Sierra
Catholic 40 to 6. The Panthers
tripped Mt. Angel, northern
winer, 21 to 14 in the confer
ence playoff game. They won
from Woodburn 34 to 0 and
Willamina 20 to 13 in non
counting competition.
Wiese, a 147-pounder, has
done much of his gaining on
rollout and option plays.

tle giants."
Hess is a sincere, hard
working coach who believes
in his assistants and his boys.
He took over the sagging
Ohio U. football fortunes in
1957, after serving seven
years on Coach Woody Hayes'
staff at Ohio Slate university.
Hess and Ohio U. fans and
alumni never have regretted
his return to his alma mater.
In three seasons, with one
game remaining, Hess has
rolled up a 21-6 record, in
cluding nine consecutive vic
tories this year.

The Detroit Red Wings,
bouncing up and down in the
National Hockey league all
season, have broken another
losing streak and today are
hopping about in second place
once again.
The Wings, humiliated by
the Chicago Black Hawks,
7-1, just three days ago,
fought back from a two-goal
deficit to edge the Hawks,
3-2, in the only game sched
uled Tuesday night. It broke
a two-game losing streak and
gave Detroit a one-point edge
over the Hawks for second
place.
