In Childhood
As many a mother of sev

more, had a

had "night terrors," and much
of this, I suspect, was due
to the child s geiting frighten

darkness. I know that in my
childhood I could have been
tremendously helped, and sav
ed an enormous amount of
mental suffering if I had had
little light in the room in
which I slept. Then, when I
heard a strange sound, I
could have seen that there
was no one in the room.
Some children get up and
walk in their sleep. Drs. Har

Bakwin of New York Univer

their recent book on "Be

said that 20 per cent of sleep
walkers studied by Pierce and
Lipcon had abnormal brain

electroencephalograph; and
more and more often they will
learn that a number of chil
dren who formerly were
thought to be just nervous or
afflicted with a behavior prob
lem have some definite injury
to the brain, due either to
heredity or perhaps to an at
tack of encephalitis after
measles or mumps or some
other such illness. Fortunate
ly, in most cases, with time,
the child tends to grow out
of his early - difficulties in
sleeping. As the Bakwlns say
for a while some of these chil
dren could be greatly helped
by being given a small dose
of some barbiturate at night.
After having suffered ter
ribly from night terrors when
I was a child, I have a strong
feeling that it is very cruel
for parents to be unpleasant
to the child who sleeps poor-
It is cruel to make him
sleep in a completely dark
room, and it is cruel not to
have sympathy with him in
his difficulties. Parents must
be patient, even when night
after night they are kept
awake by the child.
Children can be so different
in the matter of sleeping. In
a family I know the eldest
boy used to sleep so soundly
that when he had to be awak
ened his mother generally had
to pull him out of bed and
drag him around on the floor
a bit. The second boy slept so
lightly that with the least
sound in the house he was
awake.

Happy Camp The Siskiyou

Attending the session were

and Del Poe, Dunsmuir.
Also attending the meeting
were Eddie Roberts, superin

county, and Ken Young, also
of Yreka, secondary school
coordinator.

A daughter, for . the first
two years of her life, slept
so poorly, and complained so
much about it that her parents
seldom had a decent night's
rest. Later, she learned to
sleep well enough. All three
of these children were well
behaved, well adjusted, affec
tionate, sensible, and highly
intelligent. They came of good
human stock, and today, in
their fifties, they are well-ad
justed and successful. Hence
I cannot guess why two of
them slept so poorly.
