Congress Leaders
Promise Kennedy
All-Out Support

elect John F. Kennedy to
day was promised an all-out
leadership effort to push his
"must" liberal program
through a still - Democratic
House and Senate early in
1861.
"What he wants we'll do
or break our necks trying,"
aid Sen. Mike Mansfield, the
Montana Democrat slated to
become the new Senate ma
jority leader after Sen. Lyn
don B. Johnson takes over as
vice president.
"We'll support the new
president to the best of our
ability."
'Good Program'
Speaker Sam Rayburn in a
telephone Interview with UPI
from his home at Bonham,
Tex., promised early house
passage of a "good program."
He said this includes a mini
mum wage increase, a school
construction bill, federal help
for chronically depressed
areas and a stronger medical
care for the aged program.
All are Items Sen. Kennedy
told the nation his party
would deal with early in a
new Democratic administra
tion. He stressed that action in
the first 90 or 100 days as im
perative if a new president
is to expedite passage of a
legislative program.
Trims Margin
Tuesday's election trimmed
the margin of Democratic con
trol in both houses of the 87th
Congress which convenes
Jan. 3. ......
Democrats gave up two Sen
ate scats to the GOP, but still
had a top-heavy control with
a 64-36 lineup. The Republi
cans gained seats in Delaware
and Wyoming.
With only a handful of races
still unsettled,- the indicated
House makeup was 259 DemcJ
crals to 178 Republicans. This
would be a pickup of 24 scats
for the GOP, but still left the
Democrats with 40 seats more
than the 219 needed for con
trol. , V

Four Cavities Each

ties each, a total of 700 mil
lion untreated cavities in the

, By the age of 50, one-half
of those in the U. S. have
developed gum ailments,
which causes more tooth loss
than cavities do. By the age of
65, nearly 100 per cent have
gum trouble.
The American Council on
Education published these
facts and others in a sum
mary report of a two and
one-half year survey of den
tal health, practice, education
and research, called "Dentis
try in the United States: Stat
us, Needs and Recommenda
tions." Recommendations for im
provement of dental health in
clude more widespread fluor
idation of water and special
federal grant-in-aid to states,
on a matching basis, to assist
communities in meeting the
cost of initiating fluoridation
programs.
Organization of a national
voluntary council on dental
health is suggested to the
dental profession to stimulate
public interest.
