walks just a little stiff-legged,
will be graduated as a physi
cal therapist this fall from the
New York University College
of Medicine.
She's a rare example of a
youngster born with a major
body defect who has over
come it sufficiently, not only
to lead a normal lie, but to be
able to put her intimate
knowledge of pain and dis
couragement and the value
of determination to work
(or other handicapped chil
dren. Born With Open Spin
Miss Adler was born with
an open spine, an embryolo
gical failure which leaves the
spinal nerves exposed, fre
quently irretrievably dam
aged. Disability may range
from a comparatively minor
paralysis of the feet to com
plete paralysis of the lower
body.
The anomaly is one of the
major birth defects Into
which the National Founda
ton is presently financing re
search to find causes and
cures. Others are hydroceph
alus, which is water on the
brain, and enccphalocele, or
open skull.
Miss Adler's education has
in part been financed by
foundation scholarship, but
she won that with no quarter
for her physical disability.
Training Not Unusual
. It is not unusual for handi
capped persons to seek train
ing to help others more se
verely handicapped, medical
authorities said. But no one
can be edmitted to physical
therapy training who cannot
fulfill all the training require
ments. Miss , Adler cannot
handle heavy adults, but has
no problem with 85 per cent
of the cases she might be
called upon to work with
