E. D. (Debbs) Potts, mayor of
Crants Pass, overturned Fay
ette I. Bristol, GOP state rep
resentative who was House
Republican floor leader in the
1059 session.
All but one member of the
1061 Senate, Potts, have had
legislative experience.
John Hare (R-Hillsboro)
was the only Republican to
win a contest for senator. Sen.
Anthony Yturri (R-Ontario)
Senate minority leader last
year, was re-elected without
opposition.
An expected tussle for Sen
ate president is developing
between Harry Boivin (D
Klamath Falls) and Alfred
Corbett (D-Portland).
Some 44 members of the
new 60-member House are in
cumbents or former legisla
tors. Seven 1050 representa
tives, including four Republi
cans, were dumped in bids for
re-election.
They were Republicans Earl
Hill of Cushing, W. W. Chad
wick,' Salem, Evelyn Nye of
Medford and Ed Oakes of On
tario, and Democrats Verne
Cady of Burns, Carl Yancey
of Klamath Fails and Roy
Fitzwater, Lebanon, Hill was
a veteran of eight sessions.
Democratic State Reps. Al
Flegel of Roseburg and Vern
on Cook of Troutdale moved
up to the Senate. Cook was
defeated in last May's pri
mary for the Senate nomina
tion in Multnomah county but
he got on the ballot after
Democratic candidate Lew
Wallace died suddenly.
Two House members open
ly interested in the speaker
position are Robert Duncan
(D-Medford), speaker in 1950,
and W. H. Holmstrom (D
Gearhart). The two-vote edge for the
Democrats in the House may
make it lough for them to
operate as they like because
a few Democrats often cross
over and vote with the
publicans.
