tertainmont superstition has it
that death always strikes In
threes.
It did this past week end.
Star Ward Bond, 55, and pio
neer moviemaker Mack Scn
netl, 80, were both cut down
by heart attacks and movie
hopeful Johnny Morton, 35, a
top folk singer, died in an
auto crash.
All three deaths came Sat
urday. They were followed
Sunday by the hospitalization
of Clark Gable, 59, with a
heart attack. However, the
king of Hollywood leading
man for the past 30 years.was
. reported in good condition.
Mystic Number Again
And for the superstitious,
Gable's hospitalization again
rounded out the mystic num
ber of three in performers
hospitalized. Both Judy Gar
land, 37, and silent screen
idol Ramon Novarro, 61, were

This experimental vaccine
can cut deaths from more
than 50 per cent in non-vaccinated
mice to less than five
per cent.
Valley fever, known tech
nically as coccidioidomycosis,
is a lung disease caused by an
airborne fungus prevalent in
arid regions of California and
the southwestern United
States. The immunization
method was achieved through
development of a "spherule-
enclospore vaccine.
The vaccine's effectiveness
wns demonstrated on animals
infected by fungal spores en
tcring the lungs via the nasal
passages, which is the same
way that man contracts the
disease.
Problems remain to be solv
ed, however, before tests can
be made on man, Dr. Hillcl
B. Lcvine, associate bacteri
ologist, reported to the Amer
ican Public Health associa
tion. He described research
conducted at the university's
naval biological laboratory
with Dr. C. E. Smith.
Hope for an effective vac
cine arose from Smith's work
several years ago showing that
even the mildest case of val
ley fever leaves the patient
with a lifelong immunity to
the disease.
Other studies showed that
in highly endemic areas, such
as near Bakersficld, Phoenix
and El Paso, the disease in
fects almost 95 per cent of
the residents. Nearly two
thirds of these have no sick
ness with valley fever at all;
the remainder are more seri
ous, but in only a few cases
is the disease fatal.
The work of Levine and
Smith Is based upon the
known fact that the fungus
Coccidioidcs Immitis under
goes a startling change when
it leaves the soil and infects
man or animals.
Instead of focusing on the
whiskery fungus found in the
soil, as others had done in
attempts to develop a vaccine,
the California scientists work
ed out improved methods for
growing and purifying large
amounts of the fungus spher
ules and endosporcs - forms
that are found In the infected
body. They killed these parti
cles, put them in a vaccine
and' began the immunization
tests on mice.
First they infected the vac
cinated animals by the nasal
route with up to 500 valley
fever spore particles. Less
than five per cent died. Next
they infected non-vaccinated
mice with only 20 or 30
spore particles. Some 50 per
cent died.
Eventually, they found that
it took about 1,000 particles
-far more than the number
infecting man under natural
conditions - to kill F0 per
cent of the vaccinated mice-
held today for Scnnctt at the
Church of the Blessed Sacra
ment. He never married.

California pear ranchers,
whose orchards are plagued
by a blight.
, Dean Daniel G. Aldrich of
the university's division of
agricultural sciences said
economists from the Giannini
Foundation and the U.S. Agri
cultural Extension Service
will attempt to determine
whether in some instances an
alternate crop could be plant
ed. .
Aldrich said the disease
known as pear decline hit the
$27 million California pear in
dustry last year after sweep
ing through Washington and
British Columbia. Oregon
pears also have been hit by
the disease.
University plant patholo
gists are working on the dis
ease, Aldrich said, but in the
meantime ranchers must have
other ways of making a liveli
hood. Information to be made
available to the farmers, he
said,, Included what other
type, if any, crop should be
planted, costs, and the feasi
bility of replanting a diseased
orchard.
