Salem - (UPD - The Oregon
Water Resources Board said
Monday it will look into a re
port from Lake county offi
cials that the state of Cali
fornia may be preparing to
divert some water out of
Goose lake on the California-
Oregon border.
The Lake county district
attorney, in a letter to the
board, asked for an investiga
tion on the state level. The
lake is located right on the
line between the two states.
The board said it would
write a letter to California
authorities in Sacramento and
inquire about what plans, if
any, California has for the
lake.

Transplantation of Kidney
One of the greatest ad
vances in medicine was made
recently when a kidney was
transplanted from one young
man to another (not alike
twins) and made to function
normally. It was 17 months
ago that this work was done
by Drs. John P. Merrill, Jo
seph Murray, J. Hartwell Har
rison, Eli A. Friedman, James
P. Dealy, Jr. and Gustave J.
Damman. Before this, there
have been a number of cases
in which a kidney was trans
planted from one alike-twin to
his brother, but this is a very
special case.
Alike-twins grew from one
ovum and hence are chemi
cally identical. In the past,
when surgeons have trans
planted an organ like a kid
ney from one animal to anoth
er, the organ has quickly dis
integrated and has soon failed
to function. The reason is that
animal bodies will not toler
ate the presence of any tissues
that are chemically different.
Now It has been found that
this tendency of the body to
throw out a transplanted kid
ney can be overcome by treat
ing the body with x-rays. Two
similar cases have been re
ported from Paris in which a
transplanted kidney was still
functioning for some five
months. In those cases, also,
the body had been irradiated.
A Fat Child
A recent study by the Pub
lic Health Service showed that
nearly all of the children
who were over-weight while
attending grammar school,
during the years around 1938,
still today tend to be too fat.
Of those whose weight in
childhood was average or be
low average, 42 per cent are I
now a bit plump. I
