As rational and intelligent humans, most of us believe that
witches, If they ever existed at all, belonged to the
superstitious Middle Ages rather than to modern times. But
a recent study of newspaper files shows that a number of
well-educated persons still believe wholeheartedly in witches
and the power" of their curses, charms, and magical craft.
For instance, last year a 62-year-old Alabama school prin
cipal resigned after admitting to the county school superin
tendent that she believed in voodoo and had openly dis
cussed it with her pupils.
Earlier this year, a New York City waitress, questioned by
reporters about disturbances in the coffeehouse where she
worked, replied that she could say nothing about herself at
the moment because she was
studying to be a witch.

Rev. Montague Summers, an au
thority on the history of witch
craft, stated, "I know there are
witch cults today in hundreds of
cities in the British Isles."
It is common knowledge, of
course, that in areas where igno
rance and superstition are as
strong today as they were cen
turies ago, the witch is still a
creature of terror. As the Ameri
can People's Encyclopedia points
out: "Any old woman who lives
alone, collects herbs, and is mildly
eccentric is likely to be known as
a witch." News reports from the
Congo recently told how 241 sus
pectcd witches and sorcerers had
been put to death by fellow
tribesmen after mysterious trials.
But to find witchcraft still nour
ishing in the "civilized world"
comes as something of a shock. It's
hard to believe, though all of us
have probably bumped into such
superstition at one time or an
other in our lives.
In areas of Pennsylvania, for

example, it is common to see barns decorated with hex signs
for warding off evil spells and spirits. In Denmark, oeonle'
still build immense antiwitch bonfires on St. Hans Eve which
comes at the height of summer. According to legend, these
fires are built in order to trap and burn any witches flyine
over the countryside.
AN! OF E ms outspoken believers' that witches do
W exist is Gerald Gardner, anthropologist and director of
me museum of Magic and Witchcraft on the Isle of Man,
England. Gardner declares that he has met many witches in

Before you laugh at people like Callaway or Gardner,

squid. Maybe the answer to witches is equally simple.
