BAT SPECIMEN A small bat which was captured at the
Central Point grade school Friday morning by Jackson coun
ty public health officials is spread out on a piece of paper.
Chief Sanitarian Orie Moore laid a ruler by the bat and
spread out its wines to Indicate the size of the bat. One bat
in Jackson county was found to have rabies last week. Two
rabid bats were found in Klamath county. Moore warned
anyone discovering a bat or any other animal which ap
peared sick not' to touch it, but to call the public health
department. .'
Dogs, Cats Should
Be I .inoculated,
Veterinarian Says
All Jackson county dogs
and cats should be innoculat
ed for rabies as soon as pos
sible, local veterinarians are
advising.
. Dr. B. J.- Gitzen, Medford
veterinarian, said veterinari
ans have agreed to reduce
their fees so an adequate pro
gram can be started here.
It is particularly important
to innoculate hunting dogs
now, he said, because it takes
30 days for the dogs to de
velop immunity. If the rabies
problem becomes serious, the
county, and possibly the state,
could be quarantined, and
then only dogs which have
received immunization! could
be taken out of the country or
state,-Dr. Gitzen added.

the Oregon Veterinary Medi
cal association in Curry coun
ty last week when the larg
est mass animal vaccination
clinic in the state's history
ended. Over 2,000 animals re
ceived the anti-rabies shots.
Mostly dogs and a few cats
were given the vaccine sup
plied by the Curry county
board of health.

Mrs, Vivien Runte, nurse epi
demeologist, and Frank
Smith, health educator. '
The clinic was arranged af
ter a rabid dog attacked a
Gold Beach man late in Sep
tember. ' '
Two cases of bats with ra
bies were reported from
Klamath- county recently.
About 600 bats were discov
ered in one . building there,
according to reports.

eating bats from this two-
county area migrated to Cali
fornia or Mexico where they
were bitten by rabid Mexican
vampire bats. It takes from 10
days to six months for the ra
bies virus to fully develop
within an animal, Dr. Holmes
said.
It is particularly Important
to Innoculate dogs since they
live so close to humans, Dr
Holmes urged. Medford Is in
a particular danger spot since
rabies cases in dogs were re
ported only 70 miles away, in
Shasta county, Calif., not long
ago. , 1
The public health depart
ment veterinarian said he did
not know if bats are more
plentiful in this area than be
fore. Whether bats have a
more lethal strain of rabies
virus than other mommals is
an academic question, he
added.
