tronic "brains" cannot solve
for themselves: how to talk
with one another. But their
builders, the big electronic
: and, automation corporations,
appear ready to standardize
the brains' language or in
some other manner let the
.' brains work and talk to
gether.

patible, the companies hope
to make automation cheaper.
.."i The problem: one com
pany's brain thinks different
ly from another's. They use
different systems of calcula-
" tion.
Thus, if a company has a
lot of International Business
.Machines Corporation equip-
ment, it cannot readily buy
; and use Sperry-Rand improve
ments, or vice versa.
- And if one government
,agency with one kind of
equipment seeks to use data
from another agency with a
competing kind of equipment,
the conversion may be tough
or downright impossible.
- Millions Saved
- This kind of inefficiency
is expensive. If the machines
can be standardized, the re
sult will be a saving, of mil
lions of dollars annually by
customers, Alfred J. Ball,
president of the Office Equip
ment Manufacturers institute,
believes.
Dr. Joseph W. Barker, con
sultant in New York to

on data processing standard
ization, said in an interview
here that the standardization
will lower the cost of auto
mation. But he said standard
ization had pitfalls.
"We must standardize with
. out blocking technical devel
opment." , Twenty-four manufacturers
of automation equipment are
cooperating in the standard
ization venture. ,
Some of these companies'
" machines can work with each
other now, via translating de
vices called transverters.

panies to be hooked up and
worked in concert via tele

permits machines to transmit
handwriting, printing and di
agrams instantly to and from
any place in the United States
and Canada where there is
telephone service. "
In a typical installation
compact Data-Phone sets are
placed between the business
machine and the telephone
line at both the sending and
receiving locations. Connec
tions are put through as ordi
nary telephone calls and bill
ed at the same rate.
Flip of Switch
Data in any machine lan
guage is transmitted from one
machine to another with a
flip of a switch at speeds cur
rently ranging up to the
equivalent of 1,600 words per
minute, according to Landry
He explained that Data-
Phone sets receive informa-
tion in the form of electrical
pulses or bits from the origi
nating machine and convert
the pulses to tones suitable
for transmission over ordinary
telephone circuits.
At the receiving end, he
adde, Data-Phone sets convert
these tones back to electrical

data on punched cards, paper

Fast Expansion
V The AT&T executive noted
that during the past two years
Data-Phone has helped to ex
pand the' business equipment
industry and has opened new
uses for new equipment. Al
ready, he said, the major bus
iness machine manufacturers
have enlarged or diversified
their product line to produce
equipment that will function
with Data-Phone.
Currently, Landry reported,
there are about 1000 Bell Sys
tem Data-Phone sets in opera
tion across the nation, serv
ing several hundred different
customers, and helping to
solve a variety of communi
cations problems.'
Modest Estimate
By the end of 1981, he said,

a shallow, muddy lake were
rated about the same as those
taken from a deep, cold lake.
The researchers empha
sized that the tests did not
yet prove . that the effluent
from the factories actually
caused the poorer flavor, as
other conditions could have
existed that affected the fla
vor and aroma, '
It was also found in the
tests that weight, length or
the sex of fish did not seem
to affect either flavor or aro
ma.
