Khrushchev Rallies Support
Against Chinese Communists
(Editor's note: What reallv rni
en between Soviet Russia and Red
China a matter of mystery for
years may shortly be clarified by
another of Khrushchev's well
placed leaks, possibly duplicating
the delayed-action leak of his de
nunciation of Stalin at a secret
session of the 20th Congress of the
Soviet Communist Party in 1956.)
By F. Y. BLUMENFELD
"Washington-Soviet Premier
Nikita S. Khrushchev, his au
thority over the world Com
munist movement under chal
lenge by Peking, has been
busy rallying Communist bloc
support against the People's
Republic of China ever since
the breakdown of the Paris
summit conference in May.
His extraordinary perform
ance at the United Nations
and elsewhere must . be at
tributed at least in part to
pressures from Red China for
a tougher, less- compromising
Russian stand against the
West.
Failure of Peking to abide
by a Communist bloc declara
tion in support of . peaceful
coexistence, agreed to last
June at a Red conference in
Bucharest, is viewed as evi
dence of mounting ideological
differences between Moscow
arid Peking. Red' China con
tends (1) that the advent of
nuclear weapons has not
changed the struggle between
communism and capitalism;
(2) that genuine peace cannot
be assured while imperialism
survives; (3) that the final
victory of communism can be
' attained only through a "just"
war.
United States Ambassador
James J. Wadsworth said in
a speech on Oct. 1 in the U.N.
General Assembly that this
"is the only recorded instance
of a group of men anywhere
in the world believing that
a world war fought .with hy
drogen bombs, in which up to
nan or more of their own pop
ulation would be wiped out,
would lead to a more beauti
ful future."
Khrushchev takes a less
frightening stand- in his ideo
logical dispute with the Chi
nese Reds. He is said to feel
that Chinese policies would
lead to world disaster and is
confident that communisms
final victory can best be
achieved through peaceful
economic competition.
Principal Causes
Four principal causes are
given for the Sino-Soviet
cleavage: Disagreements
tactics and strategy; prestige
rivalry within the Communist
bloc and competition for the
favor of the uncommitted na
tions; population pressures
and border tensions; China's
Internal troubles --resulting
from an over-ambitious pro
gram of industrialization.
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey,
(D-Minn.) told the Senate on
Aug. 17 that "the Communist
empire used to have one cen
ter-Moscow," while "now it
clearly has two centers-Mos
cow and Peking." The Chi
nese regard Mao Tse-tung as
the ranking theoretician of
the Communist movement,
and the Russians, of necessity,
pay deference to Khrushchev
as the foremost interpreter of
Marxism-Leninism. Mao has
been portrayed in China as
the world's foremost revolu
tionary leader and as Stalin's
heir. By his pronouncements
and attitude, he has left little
doubt that he considers him
self entitled to lead world
communism. He looks upon
Khrushchev as an intellectual
"lightweight" hardly worthy
of his high place in the Krem
lin. Abandoning its adherence
to the principles, of peaceful
coexistence approved at the
1959 Bandung conference and
later at-Bucharest, Red China
has in. the last two years
broken -off' trade relations
with Japan, brutally suppress
ed a revolt in Tibet, threaten
ed the borders of India, hu
miliated Indonesian diplomats
in Peking, incited fighting in
Laos, shelled the Chinese off
shore islands of Quemoy and
Matsu, and carried on a pro
vocative type of diplomacy in
Cuba, Latin America and Afri
ca. These actions seem all to
have been taken without con
sulting Moscow.
Because any split in top
Communist leadership violates
Lenin's dictum that party au
thority must be strictly en
forced, as in a military chain
of command, plain speaking
can be'expected from Khru
shchev if he-meets Mao in
Korea. And if the Chinese
leadership does not yield
ground, the doctrinal dispute
may come before a world
meeting of Communist leaders
in Moscow Nov. 7 to celebrate
the 43rd anniversary of the
Bolshevik revolution.
1 Notwithstanding all the tan
gible evidence of disagree
ment between the two Red
Giants, including the recent
departure from China of thou
sands of Russian technicians,
the Sino-Soviet alliance is
based on mutual interests of
a compelling kind. The two
powers are in full agreement
on the main body of Commu
nist ideology and while Red
China enhances Soviet mili
tary . and political strength,
Russian know-how and help
are essential to China's indus
trialization program;
Nevertheless, authorities on
Sino-Soviet relations believe
that with the passage of time
the alliance will become in
creasingly difficult to hold to
gether. Population pressures
in China will generate ever
increasing strains along the
nearly 4,000 miles of com
mon frontier with Russia.
Such strains are already evi
dent in Outer Mongolia. It is
questioned, however, wheth
er an ultimate collision be
tween the two powers should
be welcomed by the West.
With . Red China only two or
three years away from having
her own nuclear weapons, the
reckless talk in Peking about
the inevitability of "just
wars" to abolish imperialism
holds a clear threat of atomic
holocaust.

If Gopher Didn't Dig,
He'd Be All Teeth
Eating with one's mouth
closed requires special adap
tive equipment. It really
sounds impossible, but with
the pocket gopher it's
sneaky way of eating and can
only be accomplished because
this little burrowing rodent
has his front teeth outside his
lips.
This imparts to the small
animal an appearance of ex
treme ferociousness. Even
when he is happy, he still
looks as if he were snarling.
' Up front, right where they
are the handiest for digging,
me animal nas lour very
strong, very sharp teeth
These teeth grow so fast the
little guy has to keep getting
his teeth into things constant
ly, otherwise they would
grow to the point where he
could not close his mouth. It
has been estimated that this
rodent's teeth will grow over
a foot in a year's time. At that
rate he could grow about eight
or nine feet of teeth in a fa
vorable lifetime.
To keep the teeth within
reasonable size, the gopher
must chew tough and stringy
plant roots. Along with grit
in the form of sand and dirt
and the tough vegetable fibre,
he can wear his dental equip
ment down about as fast as
they grow.
Not Only Unusual Thing
Teeth structure and their
tremendous growth is not the
only unusual thing about this
Man in Hurry
Columbus, Ohio Assistant
Fire Chief Jim Fairbanks
says a man sauntered into one
of the base fire stations and
asked: "Say, do you guys
know where I can get a fire
extinguisher?"
Thinking he wanted one
for home use, the fireman on(
duty answered: ."We have
some here, but we can't loan
them out. Maybe you could
get one from base supply to
morrow on a hand receipt."
'Well, I really wanted one
before that," was the reply.)
I'm in kind of a hurry. My
uncommon animal, for these
little characters are equipped
with external cheek-pouches,
on both sides of their villain
ous faces. These cheek-pouches
are fur-lined. Pretty handy,
these elastic purses, as the
gopher can carry a consider
able load of material in them.
If he wanted to take a trip,
which of course he never does,
and be away for a spell from
the home burrow, he could
fill the pouches with food to
last a considerable time. And,
too, the pouches are just the
thing for carrying nesting ma
terials such as leaves, twigs
and rootlets, leaving the ani
mal's feet and mouth available
for digging.
No Dirt Carriers
It's been a common miscon
ception that the cheek-pouches
were used for carrying dirt.
Such, however, is not the case.
They are only used for trans
porting food or nesting materials.
Surprising, too, that the
pocket gopher prefers to live
alone. Perhaps he, like Mrs.
Gopher, is hard to get along
with. Even the young are
kicked out as soon as they are
old enough to dig for them
selves. Once on his own the young
ster begins the first part of
his life's work - dlesinz a
series of tunnels. For the rest
of his days he will work in
the gritty underground dark
ness, gnawing on plant roots,
carrying food in his cheek
pouches, and constantly chew
ing to keep his front teeth
from becoming a burden In
stead of a blessing.
