League's Fair Is
Considered Success
By Local Officials
. Candidates, even with mod
ern facilities of mass commu
nication, still prefer to meet
voters personally, according
to many of the comments re
ceived by the Medford League
of Women Voters following
Thursday night's candidates
fair.
Mrs. Alice Rutter, the
League's voter service com
mittee chairman who handled
arrangements for the event,
said Saturday many of the
candidates expressed appre
ciation for the opportunity
of meeting the voters per
sonally. Many of the candidates,
she said, commented that they
acknowledged the possibili
ties of reaching thousands of
people through television, ra
dio and the newspapers, but
still felt there is no substi
tute for meeting the voters
personally.
Offer Opportunity
The candidates fairs - there
were three in three nights
last week - offer this oppor
tunity to all candidates, Mrs
Rutter noted. The Grants
Pass League sponsored a fair
there Wednesday night, the
Medford fair was Thursday
night, and candidates for na
tional and state offices attend
ed a similar fair in Eugene
Friday night.
Mrs. Rutter said the Med
ford League considered the
fair, which was held at Hcd-
rick Junior High school, a
success, and expressed appre
elation to organizations
which assisted the League in
staging the program and cof
fee session in the cafeteria.
The estimated 800 attend
ing the fair heard Congress
man Charles O. Porter, who
is seeking reelection, and his
Republican opponent, Dr. Ed
win H. Durno, Medford, de
bate the question of the role
of a congressman in foreign
affairs.
Another Highlight
Another highlight of the
fair was the discussion of
talks with Russia between
Mrs. Maurine Neuberger,
Democratic candidate for the
U.S. Senate, and Ex-Gov.
Elmo Smith, Republican can
didate for the Senate.
Candidates for state repre
sentative from Jackson coun
ty and all county office can
didates also attended the fair.
In many cases it was the first
time many of the candidates
from either of the major po
litical parties had met on a
common stage.
Following the program in
the gymnasium in which each
candidates was given a ' cer
tain number of minutes in
which to present his qualifi
cations and in some cases his
policies, candidates were giv
en space in the cafeteria
where they could meet vot
ers personally.
While coffee was being
served by members of the
Medford 20-30 Active club,
candidates discussed Issues,
argued points and talked
with voters to clarify stands
or policies.

purchased $98,971 worth of E
and H savings bonds during
September, according to Mor
ris B. Leonard Sr., county
bond chairman.
Leonard said that ' state
wide total sales for the
month were $2,439,957 rais
ing total Oregon sales during
the nine-month period to
$28,318,605.

Children To Collect
For Emergency Fund
A hew slant on the tradi
tional Halloween "Trick or
Treat" program will be prac
ticed for the second time this
year.
Tried on a limited basis be
fore, children knocking on
doors and saying "trick or
treat" will have, with them
boxes for donations to the
United Nations International
Childrens' Emergency Fund.
Aided by volunteer moth
ers, the money will be col
lected by the children and
given to the United Nations
through the First National
Bank of Medford which has
volunteered its services in the
program.
To encourage the children,
a movie starring Danny Kaye
and titled "Assignment Chil
dren," is now making the
rounds of county schools. The
movie shows how UNICEF,
the children's fund, operates
in 34 different countries to
aid needy children.
The film was sponsored by
members of the Medford
chapter of the Oregon United
Nations association, by friends

Students from Medford
High school speech classes,
and from Southern Oregon
college give talks along with
the film showings. Student
body organizations at the var
ious schools have voted to con
tribute to UNICEF at every
school where the film has
been shown.
Woman Arraigned
On Larceny Charge
Lennie Suthcrlin, 40, of
1014 South Third st., Jack
sonville, . entered a plea of
innocent to a charge of petty
larceny in district court
Thursday.
Mrs. Sutherlin was taken
into custody by Medford po
lice yesterday after she was
allegedly seen shoplifting
some yardage goods from J. J
Newberry's department store.
Harvey Milton Williams.

a citizens arrest complaint
and police took Mrs. Suther
lin into custody.
Judge E. Roy Bashaw set
bail at $150 and set Dec. 13
as the trial date. Mrs. .Suth
