Czech President
Keeps Word; Father
And Child Reunited

years of frustration and lone
liness ended today for Phillip
Heller, a former Czech na
tional, when he is reunited
with his 16-year-old daughter
Vira.
Heller, 43, now a shoe sales
man in Sacramento, Calif.,
fled Czechoslovakia in 1948
and came to the United States.
In his escape to freedom Hel
ler was forced to leave his
wife Jetty and young daugh
ter behind.
In the intervening years he
tried continuously to get his
family out from behind the
Iron Curtain and into this
country. He enlisted the aid
of the late Secretary of State
John Foster Dulles and Adlai
Stevenson, but their efforts
proved fruitless. ,
Wife Died
In 1954 his wife died and
Vira was sent to an orphan
age in Prague.
Heller redoubled his ef
forts. Last year he sought the
aid of Anastas Mikoyan, the
deputy premier of the Soviet
Union. His plea was rejected.
With the recent arrival of
the numerous heads of state
for tjie U.N. General Assem
bly session, Heller decided to
come to New York to enlist
the help of Nikita Khrush
chev. Several days after the ar
rival of Khrushchev and his
party, Heller was walking to
ward the United Nations
headquarters building when
he accidentally came upon
Antonin Novotny, the presi
dent of Czechoslovakia.
Heller pleaded his case with
the Red leader on the busy
city street.
"Novotny scolded me for
