Governing Ashland
Ashland - Proposed city
government changes and a re
view of current policies were
presented to the Ashland
Chamber of Commerce by
seven candidates for city
offices at the chamber's week
ly noon luncheon Tuesday at
the Mark Antony hotel.
Four mayor and-three city
council candidates discussed
possible changes and the cur
rent conditions ' of the city
government. ' t
W. R. Brown, candidate for
mayor, advocated a city man
ager form of government for
Ashland. He 1 also proposed
that city employees be classi
fied under civil service. In
addition, Brown suggested
that city employees should
live within the city limits.
Propose Open Hearings.
Russell Osborn, mayor can
didate, ' also advocated city
manager government, Osborn
also proposed open hearings
for establishing public utility
rates, in addition, Osborn said
that a reserve city police force
should be formed..
Glenn Revel, candidate for
mayor, stated that he was op
posed to city manager govern
ment for .Ashland. Revel said
he favored city inspection of
buildings and elimination of
billboards in the city.
R. L. Neill, Ashland mayor,
reviewed programs initiated
during his seven years in
office. He cited the new hos
pital, Improved city streets,
and newly-remodeled city hall
as projects carried out during
his terms.
Calls for Economy
. George Jones, city council
candidate, called for more
economy in the, city govern
ment. Council Candidate Duane
Baker said the council should
re-evaluate current policies
regarding subdivisions in the

The IUE has demanded a
tv-year contract with 3V4
par cent wage increases each
year. GE's Aug. 30 offer was
a three -year contract with
wage hikes of 3 per cent im
mediately and 4 per cent, in

Judy Holliday was reported
in good condition today at
Columbia-Presbyterian hospi
tal where she underwent sur
gery for a nonmalignant
throat tumor.
A spokesman for Miss Hol
liday said she was expected
to remain in the hospital for
at least two weeks. Miss Hol
liday was operated on Tuesday.

forest service, according to

Oct. 21, and Monday, Oct. 24,
at forest service warehouse
on East McAndrews rd.
The auction will be held at

returned to her Paris apart
ment Tuesday, tanned and
healthy and apparently recov
ered from her suicide attempt
earlier this month.
The 26 -year -old actress
spent 10 days in St. Tropez,
part of the time in a clinic,
and two days at her luxury
cottage near Paris. She slashed
her wrists and took an over
dose of sleeping pills because
of what doctors called a pe
riod of deep depression. .
