New Jersey Votes in Presidential Race Could Tip to Either Candidate

To understand their feel
ings, It is necessary to study
the intangibles which exist
here.
Crowded into 7,836 square
miles are more than 6 million
persons who make up the
largest population density per
square mile in the nation.
The residents are generally
politically sophisticated in a
state-which has long had party
bosses and people who relied
on them for jobs.
- There is a heavy Catholic
population in New Jersey and
a large percentage of Catholic
Protestant Jewish intermar
riage which could make them
quite tolerant of the religious state with a high percentage

dential contenders have cam
paigned in the state several
times. Both camps plan to re
turn Nixon and Kennedy to
the state shortly before elec
tion day. They're campaign
ing for the 16 electoral votes
of a state which ranks 46th
in size in the nation.
It is also a major industrial
state.
Democrats are out to upset
the landslide victory se red
by President Eisenhower in
1952 and 1956..
The traditional Republican
state, elected Gov. Robert B.
Meyner in 1954 and 1958 and
there appears to be little ques
tion that Meyner wields a
strong hand in control of the
Democratic state party. .
. He is doing all he can to
insure Kennedy's victory in
the state, partly in compensa
tion for refusing to hand over
his favorite-son votes to Ken
national convention and part
ly because Meyner will be
unemployed in 1962. The two
term governor cannot run for
reelection.
On the two major swings
Kennedy and Nixon made in
northern New Jersey, most
observers felt that both can
didates were well received.

ties, as he will in Bergen or
any other Republican county."
Meyner also is conceding
no points to either side, but

the occurrence, intensity and
paths of storms.

Edgewood Equestrians
The September meeting of
the Edgewood Equestrian Eng
lish Riding 4-H club was held
Tuesday evening at Sheila
Franklin's. A demonstration
was given by Sheila Franklin
and Rosemary. Turk on Eng
lish riding. .
Under old business, last
year's record books were dis
cussed. Under new business,
a tour of Wagner's Arabian
farm was. tentatively planned.
The club program was com
pleted. On the agenda were
a horse show, a car wash, a
ride up to the Applegate, a
tour of Wagner's Arabian
farm, Pete Logan's Thorobred
farm, and Lloyd Silva's Ara
bian farm, two work days and
three parties. -
Anyone between the ages
of 9 and 19 is invited to join.

. The Applegate Tricky Trot
ters 4-H Horse club met Oct.
9 at Fowler's home. We made
plans to ride in the Veterans
Day. parade in Medford Nov.
11 and to see the films on
horses to be shown in t h e
Jackson county courthouse in
Medford.
We discussed making sad
dle cloths and a flag for our
club to be used on special
occasions. Mrs. Winningham
reviewed the safet;' ules and
proper tying of r .orse for
new members.
We all practic. he differ
ent gaits of a horse, and the
more experienced riders had
a relay race.
Plans for our next meeting
were announced and refresh
ments were served by Mrs.
Fowler.'
