war, Nixon told a large rally

and defeat," he said, "but we

studios of the American

Nixon Openly Nettled
He spoke first in Long
Beach.
From Long Beach,- he and
. his wife, Pat, went to Knotts
Berry Farm, a large recrea
tion park and. tourist attrac
tion, where the vice president
was openly nettled upon
learning that Kennedy in
New York had characterized
the administration policy to
defend Quemoy and Matsu as
trigger-happy leadership.
He shouted a challenge to
Kennedy before an audience,
estimated variously from 10,
000 to 20.000 persons:
"In the last 50 years I sug
gest that he name one Repub
lican president who led this
country into war and I can
name three Democratic presi
dents who have done so!"
