Child Who Is Going To

going to be painful - that.he
will be asleep when the work
Is done; 'I don't think it is
necessary to explain to the
child that his throat will be
sore afterward. Many, years
ago, when my two boys had
their tonsils out I was much
surprised when I fould that
they did not seem to notice
any soreness of the throat.
One boy didn't even want to
go home, because he said he
had gone to have his tonsils
out, and it hadn't been donel
Obviously, his operation had

It is a good thing if, when
the child enters the hospital,
the mother can go up to the
room or ward with him and
supervise his going to bed.
If he sees that his mother and
the nurses are getting along
well together, he won't be
anxious when he is left alone.
In some places, the child
is given a rectal anesthetic in
his room, and hence has no
knowledge of going to the
operating-room. He has no
chance to be frightened. I
think this is an excellent idea.
The Collagen Diseases
Quite a few puzzled people
write to find out what is a
collagen disease, what should
be done about it, and can
thev ever.be completely cured
of it.. In the collagen disease
something seems to have gone
wrong with the chemistry 01
the tough, so-called connec
tive tissues in the body: con
nective tissues like the gristle
in 'a piece of meat, or the
fibrous tissue between two
bundles of muscle (in meat).
Among collagen diseases are
listed rheumatoid arthritis,
rheumatic fever, polyarteritis
nodosa (a curious localized
disease of arteries), systemic
lupus erythematosus (a dis
ease partly of the skin and
portly of the body), diffuse
scleroderma (hardening of the
s k i.n), and dermatomyositis
(inflammation of the skin and
the muscles under it).
In all of these several con
ditions there is usually dam
age done to arteries, the heart,
the kidneys, the joints, and
sometimes the lungs. The
cause is not definitely known.
Some researchers think the
bodily changes are due to
some type of late allergic re
sponse. They suspect this be
cause serum sickness pro
duced In rabbits produces
many of the bodily changes
that are seen In collagen dis
ease. ,
In systemic lupus erythema
tosus there may be occasional
fever "with pain in the Joints
or actual arthritis; there may
be a characteristic skin erup
tion; albumin may appear in
the urine; the white blood
cells may decrease in num
ber; t and there may be pe
culiar changes' in the mem'
