Tornado May Start Separate
Defensive Platoon Against KF
A completely separate de
r fensive platoon may start for
me Mecuord Black Tornado
t. in the Southern Oregon con
, ference football game with
. Klamath Union High school
,. here Friday night.
i That was the indication to
. day of Medford Head Coach
... rrea apiegetberg.
The District 6 A-l ruckus
is set for 8 p.m. with Med-
ford. No. 1 ranked in Orpenn
gunning for its sixth straight
The old grandstand on
the west side of the Med
ford high stadium is to be
" reserved for students of the
two- high 'schools Friday
night and not to be used for
general admission when
Medford and Klamath
, Union football teams vie, it
' was announced todav.. It
was indicated that the old ,
1 grandstand seating will be
! held for occupancy by siu
" dents until 7:45 p.m. If the
seating is all taken by that
; time, gates will be barred.
It there is some room avail-
able in the old stand after
'' that time, some general ad-
- mission fans may be ad
v milted.
1960 triumph and the Peli
cans aiming for upset that
will stop a three-game losing
streak and regain for them
lost prestige. . "
With the defensive platoon
in mind this week Spiegel
berg . and his staff have
groomed Chuck McNair for
an opening assignment at a
.linebacker post where Terry
Earl has had first call. Rich
ard Connolly, Don Tichenor
and Stall Smith have been
scrapping for the tackle posi
tion which has been held
down - by Terry O'Sullivan.
The head mentor also indi
cated that Tim White is to
have first summons at corner
linebacker over Dan Sieg and
Jim Stever the job at a deep
back ahead of Mike McCul
lough. Players' Trade ..."
A major change,1 involves
Al Funston and Sam Knud
sen whq have traded posi
tions, Funston going to line
backer and Knudsen to mid
dle guard. ' v
Earl, O'Sullivan and Sieg
all are offensive regulars.
It's quite probable that they'll
see reserve defensive . duty,
too; -McNair has been moved
up from reserve role behind
Earl. White and Stever . are
no strangers do their positions
but the other two players
have been considered .. the
regulars. Spiegelberg s a j d
that Warren Parke may alter
nate with McNair. Parke,
nevertheless, may .be', more,
needed at offensive center
sirtce regular Chuck Holt's
back is ailing
The head coach gave mor
ale bolstering as a' reason for
defensive platoon plan. He
allowed that -( other - teams
"have been' going through"
Medford defense this season
but attributed it to a consid
erable extent to the "opening
up" of offenses by rival
schools more in comparison
to past years.
Not Satisfied , "j . ".
While Spiegelberg did not
say so in exact words, it's ap
parent that he's not entirely
satisfied with the attitude of
his Black Tornado charges.
He did say, "I'd like to see
them get a real good scare."
The mentor reported a good
practice yesterday but said
that it was .the first good one
all week.
Most of the clubs which
Medford has played have
been "up" for the Black Tor
nado and played their best
game against it. Klamath
may prove no exception al
though on the basis of season
record it enters the contest
a decided underdog. Klamath,
high rated-at the start of the
season when it beat Boise,
Idaho, and tied North Salem,
has lost successively to Ash
land, . Eureka, Calif., and
Grants Pass. Medford, un
defeated, in contrast has a
string of impressive victories.

ger." Bobby Richardson, the saw-
ed-off second baseman of the
New York Yankees, never
thought they'd call him that.
But they are indeed.
Because as the Yankees
clobbered , t h e Pittsburgh
Pirates in three of the six
games, Richardson was the
batting star with a grand
slam homer, two-triples and
new World Series record
total of 12 runs batted In.
Look back over the years
at some of the hitters who
have played in the series -from
Babe Ruth right down
through such as Joe DiMaggio
and Ted Williams - and it
makes for fascinating, and al
most unbelievable, specula
tion.
Richardson is a modest lit
tle man noted for his slick
fielding and, until this Series,
was considered by most Amer
ican league pitchers as one of
the original All -American
outs. Now, all of a sudden,
he's sheer murder at the plate.
"It beats me, says the lit
tle man from Sumter, S.C. "I
can't even begin to explain
what's going on. I'm just do
ing the same old thing in the
same old way but, whango,
something seems to happen to
the ball."
Then, as an afterthought, he
added: :
"Thank goodness."
Going into the Series, little
Bobby was anything but a
ball of fire at the plate.
He had knocked In only 26
runs all season. And, in a
miserable last half of the
season, he drove only seven
runs home since the All-Star
break in mid-July.
Maybe They Should
Let Him Keep It
