Turn Selves In - Two 16-
year-old Vancouver,' Wash.,
boys walked into the city po
lice department Thursday
claiming they were runaways
and wanted to turn them
selves in. Police called the
parents of the youths and
they said they would take
care of the matter. The boys
were lodged, in the juvenile
detention home awaiting their
parents.
Hamilton Receives
Suspended Sentence

Imposition of sentence was
suspended for five years for
Marvin Lee Hamilton, Gib

was charged with burglary

placed on probation by the
court under the supervision

Court Seeks Opinion
On Non-School Area
A legal opinion will be re
quested from the state depart
ment of education on distri
bution of funds accumulated
for the now non-existent non
high school district in Jack
son county, County Judge Earl
Miller said Saturday.
The county school boundary
board which discussed the
problem Thursday, consists of
County School Superintendent
Alf B. Mekvold, County Judge
Earl Miller and County Com
missioners Chester Wendt and
Ralph James.
Thursday the group provid
ed for the distribution of $72,
000 in tuition funds accumu
lated by the district which
was disolved July by special
legislative act.
However $3,854.93 was col
lected during the new fiscal
year. This is beyond the offi
cial cut off date. The state law
provides only for distribution
of those funds accumulated up
to July ' 1, 1960, Miller ex
plained. Tuition paid to the district
for 1959-60 for sending pupils
in districts without high

Amos A. Bish, 75, of 1334 SE
Linn st., Portland, died last
week,.
Mr. Bish was born in Ash
land Jan. 27, 1885. He had
lived in Medford for 25 years
before moving to Portland.
He is survived by his wife,
Icyl, two brothers and two
sisters Lewis T.'Bish, George
W. Bish, Mrs. Henrietta Daw
son and Mrs. Meda Reynolds,
all of Medford.
Funeral services were in
Portland Oct. 5. '

Miss Helen Herbert, 55, of
Gold Hill, died in a local hos
pital Saturday. Funeral ar

Ind., according to word re
ceived here by his former
friends.
Ockerman lived in Central

gressional district cities Sat
urday, Nov. 12.
Young men interested In
such careers should contact

Friday, Oct. 14, according to
the congressman.
Porter said he would make
one principal and 10 alter
nate appointments to the Air
Force academy in 1961, one
principal and five alternate
appointmerits for the U.S.
Naval Academy and he will
nominate 10 men for the Mer
chant Marine Academy. Cur
rently, Porter has no vacan
cies in West Point, he said.
Men interested in the U.S.
Coast Guard should apply di
rectly to that service, he
added.
Applications will be limit
ed to single men from 17 to
22 years old on July 1, 1961.

Mrs. Thayer was born July
13, 1879, in Eugene, Ore., and
had lived in Medford for the
past 51 years. Her husband,
Dr. Frederick Thayer, died in
1044. She was a member of
the First Methodist church, of
the Mary and Martha Circle,
and of the Medical auxiliary.
Survivors include four
nieces, Mrs. Cleo Kent, Med
ford, Mrs. Zona Randell, Col
fax, Calif., Miss Lois Williams,
Reno, Nev., and Etha Stanley,
Caldwell, Idaho; and several
cousins, including Mrs. W. R.
Peabody, Medford.
Casket bearers will include
John Henson, Dr. Charles
Paske, M. N. Hogan, Frank
Van Dyke, Donald Kent, and
W. R. Peabody.

Sale Opens Monday

training which included five

Smith, who attended La

Two Burglaries
Reported in City
Two burglaries, one of them
at the new Port 'O Call res
taurant, were reported to
Medford city police Friday,
but apparently nothing was
taken at either of them.
Police received a call from
Adolph Bergen, janitor at the
Port 'O Call, 786 South Oak
dale ave., at 6 a.m. Friday,
and were told that someone
broke into the restaurant of
fice and ransacked the cab
inets there, apparently look
ing for money. Police said
the office door was taken off
its hinges. The burglar or
burglars also turned and left
on the record player.
The second burglary occur
red at a residence located at
1069 North Ross lane. Police
received a report of the bur
glary at 4:25 p.m. Thursday
from Jean Ann ' Bottjer,
daughter of the owners of
the bouse who reportedly are
on vacation. .
Police said entry to the
home was gained by breaking
and climbing through a base
ment window. A window
leading from the basement to
the first floor was then ap
parently removed from its
molding. Police said the glass
had been carried intact out
side and left beside the ga
rage.
The burglar or burglars ap
parently went through the
house but took nothing.

Flury Not Part of
Lawsuit Settlement

ager, said Saturday that he
will not be a part ot the
recent settlement with Mrs,
Ann Todd, Eagle Point water
user. Wednesday Mrs. Ann Todd,
Howard Todd, her husband,
Paul D. Conrad and Fritz
Carlson entered into a stipu
lation in Jackson county cir
cuit court and agreed to dis
miss their suit against the
Eagle Point Irrigation district
and the California Oregon
Power company.
According to the stipula
tion, the complainants agree
to confirm the contract be
tween the district and the
power company. The suit was
brought to cancel the contract
between the irrigation district
and the power company. The
district, on the .other hand,
agreed to certain concessions
for the water users.
According to the stipula
tion, Copco is removed from
any other suits the water
users may have filed against
the district or any of its offi
cers. Mrs. Todd had also filed a
civil suit against Thelma
short, district secretary, but
she agreed to drop her suit
against Mrs. Short as part of

spoke on "Guideposts for Par
ents" as one of the featured
talks during the recent meet
ing of the Jackson County
Toastmaster's club.
Parents should take time to
play with their children and
not depend on television to do
the full job of entertaining,
Nelson said. Parents should
also spend some time reading
with their children ,he pointed
out.
"Teach your child the value
of work," Nelson urged. "Too
many children are getting the
idea that work is something to

Police To Cite Man
After Auto Accident
A complaint will be filed
in District court charging Rol
land Ray Todd, 46, Ashland,
with failure to drive on the
right side of the highway,
state police said Saturday.
The charges resulted irom
a two-car accident Friday on
the Crater Lake highway, 28
miles north of Medford, offi
cers said. The Todd car was
over the center-line and hit
a car driven by William Haar
strich, 50, of Trail, as the two
cars came around a blind
curve at the same time, offi
cers explained.

accusations against me and I
want a chance to prove them
false!" Flury empha sized.
Flury was referring to Mrs.
Todd's suit filed against him
charging he abused the pow
ers of his former office. The
court has advised Mrs. Todd
if she plans to continue her
suit against Flury she will
have to amend her complaint
since, according to the stipu
lation, Copco is no longer a
party to that suit.
In her complaint, Mrs. Todd
has charged Flury with il
legal sale of his two-ton flat
bed truck to the district for
$2,000, of a 1948 Willys pick
up truck for $875, of a power
saw for $190 and purchase
of a power saw from the dis
trict for $40.
Other charges include al
legations that Flury failed to
collect water assessments
from some water users and
interest on overdue water pay
ments. Flury said Saturday he pur
chased the equipment for the
district when it could not af
ford to do so and later sold
it to the district.
