porosis so severe that bones
break without much injury.
The giving of ACTH to elder
ly men and women does not
produce osteoporosis. It is to
be hoped that the new studies
on chickens will now throw
light on the cause of the dis
ease in men and women. As
I sometimes say in this col
umn, man shares many of his
diseases with the lower ani
mals, and this fact helps doc
tors in finding helpful drugs.
For instance; our best drugs
for helping children with
epilepsy were discovered by
testing many new chemicals
on elipetic cats.

pointed out that in the first
two years after a coronary
attack the mortality rate is
six to seven times normal.

ment with amphetamine or
benzedrine will help a great
deal. Dr. Sol Levy of Spokane,
recently reported the cases of
100 children who were anti
social, asocial, or psychopatic,
and who apparently had had
an attack of encephalitis. They
were given benzedrine, and
in 08 cases the results were
excellent.

Many aging people ask
what they can do for osteopo
rosis, or a loss of lime salts
in the vertebras in their spine.
Because of the softening of the
bones, the person may get de
cidedly round-shouldered. Be
cause this defect occurs so
commonly in the aged, doctors
have assumed that the cause
is a loss of the sex hormones.
But often the giving of large
doses of these hormones docs
no good, and hence, as yet,
we haven't any satisfactory
treatment for the disease.
Now, I read that Dr. Mar
shall R. Urist, and Nance M.
Deutsch of the University of
California in Los Angeles
have found that when while
leghorn hens are bred for
heavy egg production, they
can develop osteoporosis. This
discovery can now give re
search workers a chance to
study the disease easily. Al
ready they have found that
in the chickens there is too
much female hormone instead
of too little. This disease can
be made much worse by giv
ing ACTH, which is a hor
mone in the pituitary gland
(at the base of the brain)
which stirs up the adrenal
glands to produce much corti
sone. Curiously, the ACTH
does not affect roosters.
