Smith, her Republican oppo
nent for the U. S. Senate, of
joining two Negro organiza
tions after he had announced
he belonged to them, but he
replied that applications were
made several days earlier.
Mrs. Neuberger said a press
statement by Smith, appear
ing in the Sept. 29 issue of
the Northwest Clarion, a Ne
gro weekly newspaper, de
scribed him as "a member of
the Urban League and
NAACP," but that applica
tions for membership did not
reach the two groups until
the next day.
'Extreme of Duplicity'
Smith explained that the ap
plications were given to a
member of the Negro commu
nity several days previous al
though they may not have
reached the organizations
themselves until Sept. 30.
: Mrs. Neuberger said this
"exemplifies the extreme of
duplicity used in my oppo
nent's campaign to cover up
his backward record against
civil rights, United Nations,
conservation, education and
other vital issues." ,
She referred to Smith as
,"a summer soldier in the
cause of civil rights," but he
charged that her statement
was another effort "to take
public attention away from
the issues in this campaign
and to protect a cnndldate
who has no real positive pro-gram."

circulating blood reserves ot
thyroid hormone necessary to
produce energy without the
need of stepping up thyroid
gland production.
This is the belief of Drs.
J. Thomas Dowling and J. T.
Nlcoloff of the University ot
California Medical School,
Los Angeles, and Los Angeles
VA Center, who have been,
studying transport of the hor
mone in the blood. (The hor
mone, thyroxine, is trans
ported through the blood
stream In a sort of "towing"
operation by special proteins
to which it is bound.)
Although the thyroid hor
mone is involved in many
bodily processes, thyroid
gland production schedule Is
relatively constant, they point
out. Since the gland never
seems to step up production
appreciably, scientists have
been puzzled as to how sud
den demands for the hormone
are met.
Blood Samples Taken
Human volunteers were
asked by the doctors to run
various distances. Samples of
their blood were taken im
mediately after the exercise
and again after they had rest
ed. It was found that after
they had run as little as 100
yards the binding of thyroxine
to proteins was reduced con
siderably.' This suggested that a small
portion of circulating thy
roxine was suddenly "cut
loose" from its "towing" pro
teins In order to meet sudden
engery demands. Changes in
the character of the blood,
perhaps acids produced in the
exercise process, are respon
sible for the "cutting loose"
of the hormone. An hour after
completion of the exercise
binding and "towing" process
es returned to normal.
Thus the body may meet
temporary needs for thyrox
ine without sudden strains on
the thyroid gland. ,
