Epidemic of Hepatitis
I recently read a govern
ment report to the effect .that
the Incidence of infectious
hepatitis has
gone,- up 250
per cent in a
year. Since
January 1st,
IS, 738 cases
have been re
ported. It is
to . be hoped
that this
trend goon

versed. Fortunately, ' people
with infectious hepatitis
usually recover quickly and
completely.
There? Is another type of
hepatitis that follows trans
fusions of blood. This type
can be so dangerous to health
and even life that I would
never permit anyone to give
me a transfusion unless I felt
it was needed to save my life
as after a big hemorrhage.
What is unfortunate today is
that according to experts,
many of the transfusions giv
en were not necessary, but
were ordered by a physician
who felt he should be doing
everything possible- to help
his patient recover quickly
A more thoughtful physician
would have said to, himself
that he would prefer not to
expose his patient to the
danger ' of later tin two or
three months getting a se
vere hepatitis, perhaps with
Jaundice. This Illness' can cost
Hie patient much money, it
caa leave him crippled with
shriveled and cirrhotic
liver, and it can even cause
his death.
A Violent Temper ' '
A number of people write
asking what they, can do for
violent and almost uncon
trollable temper. Some tell
me that a psychiatrist has ad
vised them, to let fly, so as to
get . the i aggressive feelings
out of their systems. But this
has only made their tempers
worse, so that now some of
the men are afraid that some
day they will seriously injure
someone. A number of the
men say . that i they have
learned quickly to walk away
when someone has angered
them. Several physicians
have told me they have been
losing their practices because
they fly into a. . rage the
minute a patient questions a
statement they have made.
Some of my patients are con
cerned because they sec
that, . due. to .their frequent
blow-ups, they have been
losing , the love of their
their wives. Their children
now show only fear of them
Some of .their fellow-workers
at the store have complained
about ; working alongside of
them; and as a result, the
bosses are dissatisfied.
My feeling is strong that
there is only one thing ifor
the hot-tempered person to
do, and this is to start early,
learning to keep himself
under control. Fortunately,
the more often- a man con
trols his temper 'the easier
this becomes.
Learned Control
Hundreds of patients have
remarked to me that in their
youth they had the "family
temper," but my much prac
tice of restraint, they learned
to control it. And they were
very glad that they hod done
this. Some, with a psychotic
or epileptic type of temper
said that their outbursts did

they had said or done. Some
Were so callous that they did
not notice that their wives or
children .when bawled out so
terribly were' weepy and un
happy all day. Others did
sense the unhappiness they
had produced,' and the si
lence and the hurt looks of
their loved ones kept them
distressed all day.
As I often say, blowing my
top may conceivably help me
to get rid of anger or annoy
ance, but just . think what
must happen to the nervous
system of the person who
gets bawled out and hurt!
The mental pain is particu
larly severe when the dress
ing down is given before
other people. Then, besides
the great hurt of harsh
words, there is a "loss of
face." Among some sensitive
persons such loss of face is a
devastating experience,
which does great harm to the
personality. No kindly per
son will want to hurt so ter
ribly a fellow human being.
New 4-H Project

rest a little easier if young
sters are enrolled in a new
4-H automotive project.
Oregon State college, ex
tension service "is inviting
ninth and tenth graders who
are learning to drive, "and
older teenage drivers, to sign
up for " a study - experience
program on the automobile.
According to state and na
tional records, youths under
20 years of age are involved
in more than their share of
accidents. They make up
about 7 per cent of the auto
mobile drivers, but have about
12 per cent of' the accidents.
This spring, more than 10 per
cent of Oregon drivers under
20 years of age were involved
In - accidents in the four
months, March through June.
The 4-H leaders point out
that 2 million youth reach
driving age each year and
apply for driving permits. Of
these, only a fourth receive
any organized training In traf
fic safety,

Appreciation of high way
safety and courtesy, a knowl
edge of traffic laws, and care
and servicing of the automo
bile are project alms. In their
club meetings, youths will
also discuss money-saving sub
jects - how to shop for a new
or used car, how to run it ef
ficiently, and how to keep

find a career in the automo
tive industry through the
project, notes Cal Monroe,
acting state 4-H leader.

three major proposals on
grading' and product classifi
cation which would have far
reaching effects on future
marketing of their products.
These problems will be dis
cussed at a district meeting
of the West Coast Lumber
men's association at .the
Rogue Valley Country club
Tuesday, Oct.: 11. All lumber
manufacturers from this area
are urged to attend. There
will be a refreshment hour at
6 p.m. and a no-host dinner
at 7 p.m.

dent of the West Coast Lum
bermen's association, said, "as
to what action we want to

Simpson listed . the three
major issues as (1) new FHA
proposals on use of certain
grades; (2) major revisions in
grading and lumber designa
tion on a national basis; and
(3) new proposals from the
American Lumber Standards,
commission which would af
fect certain lower grades.
