$3.5 Million Expected
To Be Spent by RC for
Donna Disaster Relief
Approximately $3,500,000
In disaster aid is expected to
be spent by the American Red
Cross to help families struck
by Donna, declared one of the
most disastrous hurricanes
felt by the east coast.
Gen. Alfred M. Gruenther,
president of the American
. Red Cross, Washinflon, D.C.,
announced recently that more
than 50,000 families along
Donna's path suffered storm
losses, and it is anticipated
some 13,000 of these will turn
to Red Cross for rehabilita
tion aid. ;
Second only to Florida res-
idents, the greatest number of
families suffering are in Pucr-

Carolinas, more than 10,000
families had storm losses; of
these 2,000 families will re
quire assistance. From the
Virginia line north, RC chap
ters report approximately
4,300 families suffering loss
es; some 800 of these are an
ticipated to request help.
Big Relief Job
.The big relief job, Florida,
will . cost over $2,000,000.
Over 25,000 Florida families
were affected, according to
Gen. Gruenther. , Of these,
nearly 4,000 have applied for
assistance.

famed Florida Keys, where
fishing boats, trailer camps,
motels, private homes, and

cultural areas and swamp
bound coastal areas, the RC is
in action.
Red Cross spokesmen say
over 200 specialists from 21
states have joined east coast
ARC chapters in bringing
needed help. Veteran AKU
disaster workers have rarely
seen a situaiion like this in
which so many . local Red
Cross volunteers themselves
are disaster victims, accord
ing to reports.
Local Nurses
Over 600 local nurses and
thousands of local volunteers
were on the job before the
hurricane struck, setting up
shelters, feeding stations, and
emergency first aid units.
In all, the American Red
Cross is utilizing all avail
able disaster relief funds and
facilities. Because of the ma
jor damage done by Donna,
Red Cross chapters are now
accepting volunteer assistance
to help those affected by the
hurricane.
