services were held this after
noon for Roscoe R. Allison,
72, former publisher of the
weekly Dayton Tribune.
Allison, who had been in
fhe newspaper business since
he was 16 years old, died Mon
day. He came to the West
Coast from Iowa in 1947 and
lived at Stevenson, Wash., be
fore coming here in 1950.

tronic larynx, will be made
available on a non-profit basis
by Pacific Telephone - North
west. It resembles a stream
lined electric shaver, contour
ed to fit the hand and design
ed to be held against the out
side of the throat while being
operated. It transmits sound
waves into the throat cavity
replacing those normally pro
duced by air passing over the
vocal cords.
Speech Produced
Speech is produced by form
ing words with the lips and
tongue just as in normal con
versation. Persons with speech
handicaps have learned to use
the instrument with a mini
mum of training and difficul
ty. The electronic larynx is pro
duced in two models, one
high-pitched to simulate the
female voice and the other
with a lower pitch for men.
Both are provided with a
finger control which enables
the user to vary the pitch of
his voice over a half-octave
range in order to produce
more natural inflections of
speech and emphasis on words
or phrases.
Employs Transistors
The device employs Bell
transistors and is powered by
self-contained mercury batte
ries of a type obtainable at
any radio store. Battery life
ranges up to several months
depending on the amount of
use.
The instrument was devel
oped by Bell Telephone Labo
ratories. Suggestions were
contributed by medical au
thorities, particularly the Na
tional Hospital for Speech Dis
orders, and by artificial lar
ynx users themselves. It is
made by Western Electric
company, manufacturing and
supply unit of,the Bell system.
Manufacturing cost is $45
which also is the cost to the
customer.
Information regarding the
new larynx may be obtained
through the local Pacific Telephone-Northwest
business of
fice. It will be made available
to the public on a first-come,
first-served basis.
Machen Murder
Trial Under Way
Portland 0TPD The murder
trial of Paul Arnold Machen,
21, Portland opened here
Wednesday with the selection
of jurors and charges against
Machen reduced to second de
gree murder.
Machen was charged in con
nection with the fatal slugging
of Edward St. George, 44, a
farm worker, on April 3.
Charles Ivan Patterson, 21,
was sentenced to four and one
half years in the Oregon State
Penitentiary earlier in the
month after pleading guilty to
a manslaughter charge in con
nection with the beating.

ary schools while professor of J
education at the University of i
California, Los Angeles. j
In one of the major studies,
Ryans, who now heads the
department of e d u c a tional
psychology at the University
of Texas, found that teachers
who rated highly in their
classroom performance, gen
erally thought well of other
people's behavior and motives.
Interest in Literaturo
They also showed strong in
terest in literature and the
arts, participated in school
and outside activities, and
considered themselves ambi
tious and initiators.
By contrast, teachers rated
low were on the average more
critical of others, emphasized
exactness and "practical
things," and preferred activi
ties which did not involve
close personal contact.
Comparing the characteris
tics of women and men teach
ers in secondary schools,
Ryans found that women tend
ed to be more friendly, re
sponsible, stimulat i n g and
democratic, while the men
were more stable emotional
ly. Single teachers, both men
and women, rated higher in
responsible, business - like
classroom behavior and verbal
intelligence than their mar
ried colleagues, but lower in
emotional stability and stimu
lating teaching.
First Investigation
Ryans' study is the first
com prehensive investigation
of teacher behavior. But, he
warns, the results apply main
ly to groups of teachers rather
than individuals and must be
taken with a large dose of
caution.
Whether a teacher is con
sidered good or poor depends
not only on his classroom be
havior, Ryans insists, but also
on the student's objectives
and attitude, the expectations
of the particular community,
and on the grade level and
subject matter taught.

More Autopsies
Needed for Study
Of Heart Disease

- More autopsies should be
performed if accurate studies
are to be made of the causes
of heart disease.
Reporting a ten-year study
in the Journal of the Ameri
man Medical association, Drs.
David M. Spain and Victoria
A. Bradess, with Charles
Mohr, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.,
emphasize the-importance of
increased accuracy in studies
being made of atherosclerotic
heart disease. They reported
findings on autopsies perform
ed on 1,329 men and women
over 30 years of age in West
chester County, New York.
Coronary artery disease
(atherosclerosis) caused 91 per
cent of the sudden deaths of
463 white men in Westchester
county, who died within an
hour after symptoms began.
The study showed that only
52 per cent, or 32 of 66 white
women died of this cause.
Only 14 of 584 sudden
deaths of persons on whom
autopsies were perform ed
were caused by cerebral
hemorrhage.
Depend on Definition
The researchers show that
in any community the relative
frequency of the various
causes of sudden death will
depend on the definition of
sudden death used by the
physician.
The proper interpretation
of the cause of death in sud
den, unexplained and unex
pected fatalities in adults,
they say, has assumed added
significance in view of the
many geographical, popula
tion and other studies being
made in connection with ath
erosclerotic heart disease.
In many cases, studies have
to be discarded because no
autopsies were performed.
