Burns Fatal To
Oregon Missionary
San Diego - IUPI) - A woman
missionary died Tuesday
nisht while being flown hero
from La Paz, Baja California,
for treatment of burns suffer
ed In a kitchen fire.
The victim was Wilma Bur
key, Brownsville, Ore., a
Quaker missionary who suf
fered burns on 60 per cent of
her body when a pilot light
on a water heater ignited
gasoline which had spilled
from a stove.
A Coast Guard plane flew
to the Mexican village, 635
miles south of here, Tuesday
to get her after the American
Consular Service requested
help.
Portland Mishaps
Take Two Lives
Portland - IUP1I - Two per
sons were killed in separate
mishaps near the middle of
the day Tuesday.
Willis Sawyer, 30, was In
jured fatally when a section
of a 10-foot deep sower caved
in on him while he was work
ing in southwest Portland, It
took firemen and others about
half an hour to free him.
Frank Albergo, 87, a Union
Pacific Railroad section hand,
was killed when struck by a
train In the Albina Yard.
There were no witnesses.

announced today more than
30.000 churchgoers chose "The
Old Rugged Cross" as Amer
ica's favorite hymn.
Mdntyre bought Josephine, but province officials ruled
she was a "captured elephant" and therefore not eligible for
export. Mdntyre, not to be stopped, hired a truck to take his
new pet from the outlying province to the nation's capital at
PnomPenh.
En route, a sudden stop threw Josephine to the floor,
injuring her.
Then she got truck sick.
Then she contracted pneumonia.
Then her digestion literally stopped and she quit eating.
Then she grew too weak to stand.
For more than a year, Mdntyre hired private nurses to
sit with Josephine around the clock. Finally the elephant was
able to walk again and the pair left Cambodia for the United
States.
But Josephine still refused to use her left ankle and on
their arrival in this country, Mdntyre took his pet to the
veterinary clinic at Washington Stale University.
The veterinarians could find nothing wrong and Jose
phine was discharged alter several nights in which Mc
Intyre had to sleep in her stall because the elephant was
frightened even though she still walked on her front knees.
Now, Josephine is at home on the ranch of Mclntyre's
brother-in-law, Fred Payne, near here. Mdntyre is going to
Burma to build more roads.
Air Force Allots

The Air Force also released

pumping station and supply
lines at the Burns Air Force
installation, according to the
office of Sen. Hall S. Lusk
(D-Ore.).
In addition, $315,000 was
released for a dam, water
pumping station and supply
line, roads and utilities at the
Mt. Hcbo Air Force Station on i
the Oregon Coast near Tillamook.
