coat and shoes, loosened his
tie, settled back in the seat
of his Air National Guard
transport "Grizzly" and sum
med up California's president
ial election prospects this
way:
"All we have to do is switch
303,767 votes to make Ken
nedy a winner - and I think
there are many Democrats out
here who don't like Nixon
but did like Ike."
The Democratic governor's
size-up was made to this cor
respondent after Sen. John F.
Kennedy's recent whistle-stop
tour of California.
The Republican view of
Nixon's chances in California
is that GOP party unity will
prevail over a divided Demo
cratic party.
Lacks Bipartisan Appeal
. Brown's feeling, shared by
several far western Democrat
ic leaders, is that Richard M.
Nixon lacks the bipartisan
popular appeal of Dwight D.
Eisenhower. They do not dis
count Nixon's capabilities or
his skill as a campaigner. But
as B lawn pujt it: '
"Nobody is neutral about
Nixon. People are for him or
against him. I hope there are
enough of them against him
to put" Kennedy over."
Kennedy, however, faces no
easy task in California.
Despite a 3-to-2 edge in
Democratic registration, the
Eisenhower-Nixon ticket won
in 1956 by 607,533 votes. Nix
on is popular in his home
state and he has a dedicated
organization here, skilled in
political campaigns. He also
enjoys considerable newspa

The Republicans feel, and
they cite as the authority Ken
nedy's brother, Ted, that Cali
fornia Democrats are not
solidly behind Kennedy. The
Republican organization on
the other hand, was and is
hand-picked by Nixon and
Republican voters and, bar
ring a handful of Rockefeller
supporters, appears to be with
him all the way.
Ted Kennedy recently, de
scribed California and New
York as the two key states
in the presidential contest.
While conceding that there
are infra-party splits in Cali
fornia, Kennedy said he felt
the various elements would
unite if for no other reason
than on the common ground
of their dislike of Nixon.
The division in the Demo
cratic party in California was
apparent to the entire nation
at the Los Angeles conven
tion when the slate's delega
tion split almost. 50-50 be
tween Adlai Stevenson and
Kennedy. Brown supported
Kennedy but he couldn't car
ry his own delegation with
him.
Nor was the nomination of
Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson as
Kennedy's running mate an
unqualified success with the
liberal element in the party,
notably the California Demo
cratic Council (CDC), an or
ganization of 50,000 grass
roots Democrats whose influ
ence has been increasing in
the past five years.
But the mutterings and

stantial Democratic majori
ties. And the state's congres
sional delegation, 18-11 Re
publican in 1952, now stands
at 16-14 Democratic.
However, Republicans
claim the pendulum is swing
intt hnrk that Brown's oer-
sonal popularity has decreas
ed during his two years in of
fice and that Republican for
tunes are on the upswing.

Barring the injection of a
stimulating issue in the next
few weeks, the California

Loan Program have been al
located $671,164, Sen. Hall S.
Lusk's office reported today.
The funds are for the 1960
61 academic year.
The program started two
years ago and 135,000 stu
dents nationally have obtain
ed some 60 million dollars in
loans. In all 1,407 colleges
and universities arc taking
part.

Two Accidents Reported in Area
One person was slightly in- southbound traffic lane to
jured in one of two accidents
on Highway 99 Monday, stale
police said.
Myrnu Lee Pfnister, 19, of
2797 Merriman rd., suffered
a bruse on her forehead when
her car went into a ditch
near Phoenix Monday, police
said.
She told officers she was
travelling south when she
swerved right to avoid n car
making a left turn. She lost
control of the car and went
into the ditch, she said.
Three cars were involved
in an accident on Highway
99 north of Gold Hill, police
said.
A car driven by Doris
Louise Marple, 34, Gold Hill,
had slowed to make a left
turn into a private driveway.
A car driven by Thomas Mor
ton Banks, 19, Merlin. Ore.,
also northbound, slid into the
avoid hitting the car whHi
was signaling for a turn. His
car hit one driven by Mar
vin Leroy Trobough, 44, of
Rosebuig. The Banks car also
hit the Marple car In the
rear, officers said.
A complaint will be filed
in Gold Hill justice court of
the peace court charging
