Hit Publicity
Undoubtedly you have read
more about .the oyster than
any other creature of the sea.
You are probably in posses
sion of more facts concern
ing its life and habits than
you know about the likes and
dislikes of the people who
live two houses away from
you.
The publicity given this an
imal is justified, for oyster
fisheries are commercially
the most important of any
shell-fish industries. Few are
the unfortunate individuals
who have never enjoyed this
sea delicacy, no matter how
far they may live from the
mother ocean in which the
oyster lives.
Oyster shells 16 inches long
have been found in old camp
sites where the American In
dian discarded them hundreds
of years ago. Oysters the size
the Indian found are non
existent today, but probably
we have more of the srrlaller
ivariely.
'Many Peculiarities
:j Scientists have discovered
hiany unusual eccentricities
ithat make the oyster culture
S complicated study.
, I It has been pretty accurate
ly determined that the female
ioyster lays upwards of 15 or
$0 million eggs at a single
.spawning. Normally she
spawns several times during
the summer, hence the poten
tial number of baby oysters
Is astronomical. However,
millions of the tiny eggs never
get a chance to hatch. They
go lo feed the hungry hordes
that roam the sea.
Probably this is in keeping
with the over-all plan. Only
about five hours are necessary
to hatch the eggs into tiny,
free-swimming creatures that
do not look like oysters at all.
Another lapse of 24 hours and
a shell begins to form on the
tiny speck of oyster-life.
By the end of a week the
shell practically covers the
little mollusk. Shortly, they
stop their swimming life and
become affixed to some solid
support. Now they are known
as "spat." If they have good
luck and conditions remain
favorable, they will reach
maturity in about two years.
Shape of Shell
The upper shell of the oys
ter is usually flat, while the
lower shell is convex; the up
per shell is 'thick, somewhat
folded and very Irregular.
Once attached, the oyster
feeds on small animal and
plant matter that is drawn
into the body with the sea
water.
Small hair-like cilia on the
gills create tiny currents in
the water and assist in main
taining a constant supply -f
food. Several gallons of sea
water pass through the oys
ter every 24 hours. Exactly
what the animal and plant
life is that causes the oyster
to be content with its diet, is
a question not "fully under
stood. .
Close to the inner side of
the powerful abductor muscle
that opens and closes the two
valves of the shell is a tiny
heart. A delicate little bulb
like organ that beats as
rythmically as our own. In the
"heart of an oyster" there is
little emotion, but what could
expected of a nut-shaped lit
tle guy that is mostly juice.

Most Film Performers
Found To Have Highly
Stimulating Minds
By VERNON SCOTT
Hollywood - OIPII - How
bright are movie stars?
Glamour folk have never
won Oscars on an I.Q. basis,
and few hold college degrees.
But almost all of them are
smart enough to have amas
sed sizeable fortunes. A num
ber of performers have high
ly stimulating minds.
Among those who prowl
the intellectual forests are
such diverse (and in some
cases improbable) stars as
Marlon Brando, Burt Lancas
ter, Tony Curtis, Kirk Doug
las, Jerry Lewis and Charl
ton Heston.
Only Personal Lives

personal lives. Many have

nothing else to talk about In
the first place.
But take Heston, for ex
ample. Perhaps because of his
record, for playing Biblical
characters, he has become an
authority on religion. His li
brary is filled with research
books on the subject.
He frequently is called
upon to speak on religion,
and his texts are taken from
well - marked, foot - noted
sources which he pores over
by the hour.
Curtis has an unquencha
ble enthusiasm for everything.
Tony has taught himself to

UCLA to study chemistry and
biology to satisfy his desire
to learn.
Questioning Mind
An omniverous reader,
Marlon Brando can discuss
philosophy, art and the whole
spectrura of human experi
ence at length. He has a ques
tioning mind and a passion
to right social injustices.
Jerry Lewis has a brain?
You betcha. He has an In
ventive mind and a, vivid im
agination, He has equipped
his home with electronic par
aphernalia, including a re
cording studio and tape facil
ities. Jerry often pushes but
tons, flicks switches and
broadcasts directly from his
home to an FM station he
owns in the San Fernando
Valley.
It takes more than just a
little gray matter for a man
to write, produce, direct and
star in his own movies.
Drive, Intelligence

' Both men are well Inform

side their circle of close
friends.
They are just a sampling of
performers who can hold
their own in menial gymnas
tics. JackLcmmon, a Harvard
graduate is a highly intelli
gent actor, as are Glenn
Ford, Robert Ryan, Debbie
Reynolds, Loretta Young,
William Holden and Yul

Most of them got lo the
