Old-Fashioned Look

shaggy fabric surfaces and
bulky sweater stitching carry

The young set, too, has

more "grown-up" designs, It's

Tunics take shape in pina

jumpers with large round col'

Velveteen is the major
dress-up fabric. One Victorian

Sweaters are shaggy and

Families Now Want
Activities 'Centers'
It used to be the "family
room," now it's the entertain
ment center.
Stereo, hi fi, television all
have helped to spur interest.
Then there are the "live mu
sic" fans, as a growing num
ber of children and adults
learn to play a musical instru
ment.
Whatever the reason, it's
true that modern families
seem to be not so much inter
estcd in the decorating of a
sort of catch-all room that
covers many activities as
they are in the creation of a
looking and listening" head
quarters, where the accent
often is on the latest develop,
mcnts in stereo.
Usually, there arc two deco
rating objectives for the en
tertainment center-one, a sot
ting that's an effective back
ground for the equipment, be
it hi fi set, stereo console or
piano. Two, surroundings
should be not only comfor
table but attractive to the eye.

Foundation Aids
Mimic Fashions
In Shape, Color
Foundation garments for
fall take their shape and col
or clues from the dress, suit
and sportswear collections.
For the full - skirted dress
es with dropped waistlines,
there are bra-lettes to mold
an unbroken line -from bust
to mid-hipline.
For the slimmer low-waist
fashions, there are sleek cor
selets, and girdles which con
centrate control at the upper
curve of the hips.
For the easy-fitting suits
with cardigan or long, boxy
jackets and softly pleated or
arrow-straight skirts, there
are long-legged pantie girdles
to taper the. thighs.
And there are brassiers to
suit every neckline that de
signers of outer fashions have
come up with; camisole,
scoop, square, ring, V-back
and backless.
Many corselets, as well as
bandeaux and long line bras
sieres, have lingerie - like
straps set wide at the shoul
ders. Many dip low in back
and some bandeaux, through
ingenious strap .arrangement
or elastic construction bare
the back completely.
New fabrics control with a
light touch. Laces are soft
and pretty. Power nets are
beautifully patterned.
And throughout the foun
dation collections, there is ev
idence of new approaches to
color. Strong and pale colors
are blended. French blue has
white overlay. Navy lace ap
pears over a sheer rose-colored
panel.
Beige continues to gain pop
ularity as a basic foundation
color, even for full-figure
styles. Here and there, min
gled with the ever-basic white
and black, are cocoa, brown,
scarlet, turquoise, shocking
pink and lilac girdles and
bras. ' ,
These foundations comple
ment the lilas to plum range
in dress collections, the pinks,
the paisley prints, the rich
plaids; and in evening fash
ions the jewel tones that bal-
lance the midnight black chif
fons and velvets.

Colors Stress
With Appeal
Colors in fashion stress the
purple palette, with color
names that appeal to the pal
ate. Served up is a fruit-and-wine
menu, including purple
wine menu, including purple
influenced reds: plums, mul
berry, raspberry, grape, bur
gundy, claret.
Another good-enough-to-eat
purple hue is eggplant. Or, for
those who would rather feast
their eyes on flowers, there
are fashionable lilacs, violets
and purple-nink azaleas.
. Edibly named or not, the
purples usually have their
heyday in the spring, and they
look particularly refreshing
in this fall appearance.
Spring-like, too, is the impos
ing number of pale beige and
off-whites.
It's all part of a new ap-1
proach to color. After the re- i
cent interest in muted, smoky
hues, fashion now trends to
either deeper and richer or
lighter and brighter colors.
Purple is closely followed
by red, from appetizing straw
berry and cherry to vintage
wine hues. Blues are intense,
and greens have more char
acter, moving away from the
no-color look.
Perhaps the most colorful
variety is seen in coats and
"dress up" dresses. Here, the
fashion hues take their names
from something for the jewel
box rather than something Ijt
the table - gold, coral, am
ethyst, emerald,, turquoise,
topaz, to mention just some
of the leaders.
Aristocratic grays - slate,
for example - and many
browns join the beiges and

whites among the important
neutrals. The browns particu
larly seem headed for a un
usually active season, in a
range of hues that includes
such fashion-appetite tempt
ers as spice, cocoa, coffee.
And, of course, fall would
n't be fall without plenty of
black. It's new looking paired
with brown in distinctive
plaids and distinguished when
partnered with fu. - and busy
in fashion b;- day or evening.
Plaids, both darkened and
brightened, stripes and checks
join the fall color news.
IMPORTED - Luxurious silk

rect" for surburbia and city
too. Imported cashmere, band
adds a touch of distinction.
