toxin, the food poisoning ma
terial produced by staphylo
coccus aureus organisms, Uni
versity of Wisconsin studies
have indicated. The worms
used are called soil nema
todes and are Just large
enough to be seen with the
naked eye In strong light.

nematodes can be mass pro
duced and easily controlled
In laboratory cultures. Be
cause of this, It Is possible to
use more of them In testing
than If more expeniive ani
mals were Involved, thus in
creasing the accuracy of the
teat.
Easily Interpreted
Results of the tests are
easily Interpreted by watch
ing the nematodes which had
been eating the food to be
tested. If the test Is positive,
they lose their snake-like mo
tion temporarily if mildly af
fected, or die it severely
poisoned. The minimum time
for producing a reaction on
the nematodes Is 30 minutes;
readings are confirmed after
one hour, and If no effect Is
shown after four hours, nega
tive results are reported.
While the University of
Wisconsin tests were concern
e ' irlmarlly with milk pow

that food poisoning cases have
been traced to the staphylo
coccus aureus enterotoxin in
many foods. Man carries the
bacteria in light scratches and
in deeper Infections such as
bolls.

toxin, and plan to study ways
of controlling the production
of enterotoxin.

as parents care for their
small chldren they are full
of fear that they may inter
fere with their liberty. The
parents have been profound
ly Influenced by the theories
that many writers have been
handing out for years. As
some psychiatrists are begin
ning to say, 'evidently these
theories have done mainly
harm because we have much
more Juvenile lawlessness
than we ever had before, and
our teachers In schools are
greatly handicapped by the
children's lack of any respect
for authority.
Interestingly, one of the
wisest psychiatrists that
America ever developed was
Dr. Abraham Myerson. I en
Joy his writings so much that
every so often I re-read one
or two of his books. In one
of them, "The Foundations of
Personality" (1921) Myerson
tells the remarkable story of
a patient of his, a puritanically-bred
young woman who
fled from her restrictions and
inhibitions In old New Eng
land and Joined a "free love"
colony In upper New York.
After two years, she left, and
came nome. as she told Dr.
Myerson, what she had found
wss not freedom. "You found
yourself bound to your de
sires, a slave to every wish.
It grew awfully tiresome:
and besides, It brought so
many complications. Some
times you loved where you
weren't loved and vice ver-

so much of It and pleasure
disappeared after a while. It
wasn't conscience I still be
lieve and right and wrong

technicians are disagreeing as
to its importance and where

The extremists think that
support may be found as low
as 325-540 while the middle-
grounders favor 590 or a little
higher, he says.
One school of "reputable
technicians" think that sup
port may be reached as high
as 580.
All agree, Hooper says, that
this is not the beginning of a
"bear market" since a de
clining price trend in most
groups has been with us for
many months. Most also
agree, however, that there are
no convincing indications that
the major trend is ready to
change from down to up, the
analyst reports.
Bache & Co. says that
Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer has
been hit a lot harder in the
past few sessions than the
facts seem to Justify, so it re
gards the present weakness
as an excellent buying oppor
tunity. The stock now sells at
around 7 times this year's ex
pected earnings, Bache notes.
Martin Gilbert of Van AI-
styne, Noel & Co. says that
any rally should be used to
lighten holdings "since it is
obvious that subsequently
there will be a test of any new
lows established."
