More National
Seashore Parks
Urged for System
New York - Though open
only eight years, the Cape
Hatteras National seashore Is
to popular that a dozen more
similar units are being urged
for the National Park system.
So reports Don Wharton in
Our First National Sea
Shore," a September Reader'!
Digest article.
Nearly half a million vis
itors a year are now attract
ed to the 70 miles of shore
preserved in its natural state.
Some 194 areas have been
suggested as possible Nation
al seashores and the National
Park service has recommend
ed one more on the Atlantic,
five on the Pacific, one on the
Gulf coast and five along the
Great Lakes. With the ap
proval of the President, the
secretary of the interior has
asked legislation to set up
National seashores at three of
these sites: on Cape Cod, on
Padre Island off Texas, and
at Oregon Dunes, about half
way between California and
Washington.
"All three would make
marvelous National sea
shores." writes Wharton. "We
should move quickly to set up
these three and we should
create at least one on the
Great Lakes - the nation's
longest shore line. We should
plan for still more until our
great system of National
parks is matched b,y an equal
ly great system of National
seashores. . I
