Try and Stop Me
-By BENNETT CERF-
rjOMlNATING PERSONALITY behind the annual sum
mer concert series in New York's Lewisohn stadium is,
as every music lover knows, a bouncy, irrepressible lady
named Minnie Guggen
heim. Her daughter So
phie, a golf champion in
her own right, has just
put together an engaging
biography, of her ma
called Minnie is Mc, re
plete with hilarious and
dramatic highlights.
There are stories about
the annual Gershwin con
cert that invariably packs
the stadium, the night
Heifetz played through a
Brahms Concerto durinc
a downpour because not
one member of the drenched audience moved, and the mem
orable evening an unknown Marian Anderson made a sensa
tional New York debut in 1925.
Minnie Guggenheim's favorite composer is a man she in
variably refers to as "that fine boy, Rodgcrs Hammerstcin."
Riddle submitted by Richard Ehrlich: "Q. What's the richest
country in the world? A. Ireland, because Its capitol is always
Dublin."
