European Lingerie Fancier,
Says Designer Edith Head

Hollywood - (UPD - Costume

Change Often

Stillwater, Okla. -(Science

ditches may all look alike, but
each has an individual char

and biologically from hour to

The reason for the change

that in the morning, water in
a typical ditch, like soda pop
in a bottle, contains extra car
bon dioxide which makes it
acidic and turns the litmus
pink.
This situation exists because
nighttime activity of micro
icopic animals and decaying
matter have used up much of
the oxygen and released car
bon dioxide and phosphate, an
essential nutrient for plants,
Into the water.
Acidity Decreases
i As the sun comes up there
are many animal forms in the
water. Green plants start mak
ing food, using up the carbon
dioxide and phosphate and re
leasing oxygen again. The
acidity of the water decreases
and by three or four in the
afternoon, when plant activity
is at its peak and animal
forms have been reduced, the
litmus paper will show a more
alkaline reaction.

Leopardskin Panties
She found the foreign ac
tresses a far cry from move
town glamour girls who wear
leopardskin panties - or none
at all.
'Thev have a different con
cept about underwear over
tliere," Edith said. "They
wouldn't have to worv about
being arrested if they sudden
ly lost their dresses in pumic.
"Noither would the girls
be embarrassed by padding.

According to Edith, a trim
little woman who dresses sty
lishly herself, European gais
have firmer figures than their
American sisters.
"Maybe it's because they
walk more and exercise more
frequently," she said.
"Another thing, women
over there wear more under
garments. This is probably
because the climate is colder.
Even then, their undies are
fancy with plenty of lace."
Though Edith is well vers
ed on unmentionables, she is
concerned only with outer
garments when it comes to
business. Actresses generally
wear their own lingerie for
movies.
"My problem is to design
gowns to suit the character in
the movie, Editn sam. "wnai
thev wear under my designs
is their own business. But I
must say, the Europeans are
better dressed where it does
n't show.
