West Linn - (UPD - Damage
has been estimated at between
$50,000 and $75,000 in an ex
plosion and fire that gutted a
barge loaded with chemicals
and damaged a dock and ware

night.
The Western Transportation
Co. barge blew up when a
barrel of sodium peroxide ig

explosions.
There were no serious in
juries but some 25 firemen
suffered burns around their
eyes and on bare skin.
Flames High in Air
The blast shot flames 300
feet in the air and a resulting
fire gutted the cargo barge.
West Linn Fire Chief Joe
Nixon said there were 20 to
30 barrels of the chemical on
the barge at the time and all
of them blew up. Sodium Per
oxide is used in making paper.
Nixon said an accurate esti
mate of all damage could not
be determined until a survey
is made. Damage may have
resulted to several automo
biles in the area. The explo
sion produced a "fallout" of
chemical powder which land

"I sent a letlsr to Washing

ONE OF Art Linkletler's more rueful memories concerns
the time a lady in his audience wr6te him a check for
$225, payable to his favorite charity, for the privilege of
smacking him with a
vanilla cream pie.
"She let me have it,
too," recalls Art, "square
