What's better than a picnic afloat, where appetities are sharper and simple fare seems elegant?
Enjoy Your Boat
But Play It Safe
1. Learn to swim. Be sure all passengers
can swim or have life preservers handy.
2. Cany an approved life vest, cushion, or
jacket for each person. Children should wear
theirs while aboard.
3. Have all required equipment lights,
horn, life preservers, and approved fire extin
guisher plus spare parts and tools, first-aid
kit, anchor and line, bilge pump, compass, and
distress flares.
I. Step into the middle of a small boat and
keep all weight low and well balanced. Never
stand up suddenly.
5. Gas up only in approved manner. Smell
bilges for gas vapor before starting engine.
6. Never overload the boat.
7. Don't overpower craft by using too large
an engine. Travel through harbor areas slowly
so your wake does not disturb other boats.
You are legally responsible for your wake.
8. Don't challenge threatening weather.
Stay in port.
9. Remain with the boat if it capsizes. Shore
may be much farther away than it appears.
10. Learn seamanship. Obey piloting rules
of the road.
