Pickin' Pears

Just before you go into the
coffee shop there is a stair
way to the left. You could
have passed it a hundred
times without noticing it, but
now you stop dead still to
look.
The top part of the walls
are a sunshine yellow, the
bottom between an apricot
and rose shade, and the rail
ings, purple! Doesn't that
sound gay, and surely at least
suggest an area of fun?
7 That's just where thai
stairway does lead to - the
indoor recreation-which men
particularly enjoy, one for
pool, another for cards, shuf
flcboard space, and the
"Green Room" which larger
groups used for parties, meet
ings, TV and other activities.
The whole thing is getting
a "new look." The newly
painted walls are a light blue
green, and everything so
fresh and attractive-an invi
tation to the members and
volunteers who act as hostes
ses, to spend many pleasant
hours there.
. A frail, while-haired, distinguished-looking
gentleman
stopped his wheel chair long
enough for a greeting. He
smiled and little crinkles ap
peared around the twinkling
blue eyes.
'The gloves which he used
as he propelled himself along
came off revealing soft hands,
which matched the gentle
voice.
His 83 years have been full
of adventure, and encounters
with colorful people of the
old West.
- Frank Stewart knew Sit
ting Bull well. Said Stewart
in his ward, "Sitting Bull
was the greatest leader this
country ever had." Others in
cluded Buffalo Bill, Little
Annie Oakley who "could
shoot the head off a running
quail."
Stewart also knew Calam
ity Jane, female scout, fron
tier woman and one of the
most picturesque characters
of the Early West, whom Cap
tain Egan once laughing said,
"I name you Calamity Jane,
the heroine of the plains."
Stewart was in Dakota Ter
ritory in lRflO.
He was 12 years old living
with his father and mother in
a town called Gettysburg, Da
kota Territory. "Women, old
men, and children were mas
sacred by the U.S. Cavalry at
the Battle of Wounded Knee,"
Stewart stated.
This was a revenge action
on account of the Custer dis
aster. The Indians were all
buried on the prairie in one
hole.
Sitting Bull was killed at
Standing Rock by his own
men a week prior to Battle of
Wounded Knee.

From Camp White
came a stagecoach driver,
1896-'97, between Billings,
Mont., and Lovell, Wyo, The
war with Spain broke out in
April, 1898, and Stewart
"joined up." After the war he
went back to Dakota Terri
tory. Teddy Roosevelt was a two
gun man, Stewart said, and
made it hot for many an out
law on the Little Missouri
River, where the Great Amer
ican was in the cattle busi
ness with a French Count,
who was a millionaire.
Suddenly Stewart had fin
ished talking. He began to
draw on his gloves over his
soft hands.
People and places in the
news are always interesting.
Attracting more than usual
attention at the station li
brary is a book of excellent
photographs showing London
by Tony Armstrong-Jones,
London photographer, and
Princess Margaret's husband.
Attention was called to the
volume by Chief Librarian
Enid Holmes. It is a superb
pictorial book which proves
that he can take not only de
lightful photographs but that
he can catch forever a spon
taneous, personal and unfor
gettable vision of London and
its people, Miss Holmes said.
The domicilary is always
increasing its program to ben
efit and enrich the life of the
members here. A recent new
activity, made possible by the
VAVS, is the reading and dis
cussion group for rqen with
badly impaired eyesight.
The men included in this
group are not totally blind
but cannot read even the
newspapers or often even
their own letters. The volun
teers working with this group
read from current literature
and lead discussions about
present day happenings and
fill special requests.
In the early morning, the
new coffee shop looks like a
pirate's den.
Patches on their eye. Lan
tern-jawed pensioners. Shirts
open at the neck. Tattooed
hands with "John Paul Jones"
in blue ink.
And the cigarette smoke.
Oh, man.
Ellis J. De Hart, 62, single,
spent the past several months
in the Florida Keys. Saw only
one person in swimming.
The rest of the 125-mile
beach was covered with real
estate ads. The whole area,
according to Ellis, is covered
with saloons, night clubs, real
estate gags, and brush.
He was glad to get back to
Oregon, and especially to the
Domiciliary, he said.

Onto Oregon Cavalcade, Inc.,
at their annual reunion in
Independence, Ore., recently.
This was the first time that
the group has gathered since
the end of their four-month
wagon trek from Indepen
dence, Mo., to Independence,
Ore., last August.

61, principal of the Sevent
Day Adventist school in

ent natural causes while hik

west of here Friday.
The body was being
brought out of the area Sat
urday. Stewart and the Melvin
Parker family, also of Grants
Pass hiked into the area
Thursday.
Only known survivor of the
victim is his wife, Marie.
The body was to be taken
to Eugene.
