Hundreds of times in my
medical life I have been con
sulted by a man (or woman)
who for months or years had
been straining every nerve to
accomplish something.
Eventually outraged nature
said she had taken enough
punishment and wouldn't
stand any more. She said the
person would have to quit and
take a rest or else there
would be a nervous break
down. I remember a nice friendly
man whose main cigar store
and seven branches burned up
in the great San Francisco
fire in 1906. For the next
several years he worked day
and night to rebuild his busi
ness, and then he went into a
mental slump. He came to
me, asking what he could do.
I said to him that he was
like u man who had drawn
out and spent recklessly every
cent he had in the bank. Now,
what he had to do was to try
so to live that each day he
could put back in the bank
of health a little of the
strength he had "blown in."
If he did this for a year or
two he would probably not
only fee I well and strong
again, but he would have
some reserve suengin wun
which to meet some emer
gency which might arise, like
a death in the family, or some
other such disaster.
Always, I say to these peo
ple who are close to a nervous
breakdown, "Do recognize the
early symptoms - such as an
inability to take in what you
are reading - and back up be
fore you go over the edge.
Why? Because once a man
goes over the edge, it may be

to sleep, and perhaps then
every sedative drug will work
the wrong way - more like a
stimulant.'
Often in these cases, when
the patient is too tense to re
lax, too tired to sleep, too
mixed-up physically and psy
chically to react rightly to
drugs, and too jumpy to profit
from a vacation, his poor doc
tor doesn't know what to do
to help him.
Sometimes, then, he can
help himself and start work
ing back to health by resting
on a couch. Saturdays and
Sundays; going to bed early
each night and, often taking
barbiturate with the hope of
getting sleep. For a few
months he must not be afraid
of these sleep-makers. If he
has any sense at all, he won't
get a habit.
Actually, I think there are
hundreds of persons right now
in mental hospitals who
would not be there if, when
their ability to sleep left
them, they had immediately
taken barbiturates in quan
tities adequate to give them
sleep.

dent Richard M. Nixon served
notice Thursday he is ready
and willing to campaign on
the controversial issues fought
out in the pre-election session
of Congress such as medical
care for the aged.
The GOP presidential can
didate's Democratic opponent,
Sen. John F. Kennedy, al
ready has said he will carry
the fight for his proposals to
the voters if Congress does
not approve them.
Nixon, just back from a
one-day trip to Detroit, made
plans for at least two more
visits to heavily unionized
Michigan. Unlike his "non
political" address Wednesday
to the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, he said his next trips
would involve political talk
"in spades."
The vice president planned
to preside at the opening of
the Senate session today.

Disperse Crowd
Leopoldville, The Congo -(UPU
- Police fired into the air
Thursday to disperse an anti
government crowd in front of
a hall where Congolese Pre
mier Patrice Lumumba was
making the keynote speech to
the Pan-African People's con
ference. The incident came not long
after Baluba tribal leader Al
bert Kalonji had appealed to
Katanga President Moise
Tshombe for military aid to
fight off Congolese troops
sweeping rapidly through the
so-called "mining state" in a
move that threatened bloody
civil war.
The Congolese troops were
part of the forces being mass
ed by Lumumba for action
against secessionists in Ka
tanga and Kasai provinces.
Requisitioned airliners flew
a n estimated 1,000 native
troops to southwestern Kasai
Wednesday in apparent prep
aration for all-out attack on
the so-called "Mining State"
proclaimed there by opposi
tion leader Albert Kalonji.
