Fleas Killed By
Dog Food Treated
With Chemicals
Corvallis Dog's best friend
may have thrown a monkey
wrench into the time-honored
pastime of flea-scratching.
An Oregon State college
scientist has concocted a
chemical treatment for ' dog
food that promises to leave a
pooch foot-loose and flea-free.
Here's how it worked in
ORS trials. Light dosages of
chemicals mixed with dog
food went into the dog's
blood- . bloodstream without
noticeable injury to the dog.
But the chemicals played ha
voc with fleas that nipped the
dog. ' . . . ' .- .
It all resulted as an offshoot
of work by R. L. Goulding,
OSC agricultural experiment
station entomologist. His. ex
periments with chemicals to
control insects that bite cattle
suggested the idea.
Exposed to Fleas ,'
Dogs . were fed chemically
treated foods, then exosed to
fleas all carefully counted
for four days. A recount at
the end of the trial found 85
to 95 per cent of the fleas
dead.
Further proof that every

effect of the treatment. Vet
erinarians discovered that the
chemicals sharply reduced
stomach worms in the lucky
pups.

the project.
Preliminary Findings
Goulding emphasized that
his findings are only prelimi
nary. Many angles need inves
tigating by researchers and
dog-food producers before a
flea-proofing food could be
perfected and marketed.
Unanswered questions: How
much chemical could a dog
takef or long periods without
damage? How much chemical
is needed to keep a dog flea
free? What would the food
cost and how long could it be
stored?
Meanwhile, the researchers
see deeper implications in the
findings. Most rodents carry
flease of various types fre
quently infected with disease.

dog over to the Oregon Hu
mane society, or to agree to
pay board for the dog. He
said it was the responsibility
of police to care for his pet
until he could reclaim her.
Meanwhile, the U. S. mar
shal who arrived to conduct

the dog. ,
Police said the situation
may be further complicated
before long, since the shep
herd appears about ready to
have pups. But officers said
if the Browns continue to re
fuse to release the dog, a pa
trolman has agreed to care
for her.
