Signs of Affection
Blessed is the loving wife
who often can show affection
to her husband and her chil
dren! Recently as I visited in
the home of lovely people.
was so pleased to see that my
host's wife was not only much
in love with him-after many
years of marriage-but she did
not mind showing this love,
even when a number of
friends were in the room.
As she would pass by her
husband, she might give him
an affectionate pat, or put her
arm around him, or run her
hand through his hair. These
touches were such beautiful
signs of a warm and deep
love.
As I watched this happy
couple, my mind shot back to
a day, many years ago, when,
after 10 days of searching in
vain for a local cause for the
frequent abdominal pains of
certain distinguished and
very likeable American, I
asked him, "What is there in
your life that is distressing
you greatly?"
"Tears came to his eyes, and
he said,' "Doctor, I have a
good wife who I think loves
me; she makes a lovely home
for me; she entertains ' my
guests beautifully, and she is
always kind to me, but it
never seems to occur to her
to reach out and touch mc or
snuggle up to me as I think
loving woman should do.
And being of an affectionate
and demonstrative nature, I
miss those little signs of af
fection. I would do anything
for her if only occasionally
she would reach out to me in
a loving way."
Later, I spoke to the wife
and asked her if she could
perhaps make an effort some
times to make him happy with
a touch of her fingertips. She
said she could not do it. She
had been brought up by a
very proper and dignified
New England mother who, so
far as she could remember.
had never once kissed her, or
cuddled her, or been affec
tionate with her. She feared
she could never reach out to
anyone, and certainly never
when anyone was around.
Like her mother, she had the
feeling that nice people just
didn't do that sort of thing!
All I can say again, is how
blessed and fortunate are all
those men and women who
can show little signs of affec-

derwater eyes for the Navy's
famed frogmen.
Strombcrg-Carlson and the
Navy Electronics laboratory
report that portable sonar
units, powered by standard
flashlight batteries, have been
developed for vise by the frog
men in detecting submerged
objects in murky water.
The unit is only slightly
larger than a basketball and
weighs 20 pounds. It is en
closed In an aluminum easing
and has grips on the side for
the diver to hold.
Earphones attached to the
unit provide the underwater
swimmer with information
about objects detected by
sound waves.
Stromberg - Carlson plans
delivering 10 prototype units
this year under a contract
awarded by the Bureau of
Ships in Washington.

I am glad to see that some
authorities now feel that
left-handed child who is made
to use his right hand is not
likely to start stuttering or to
get into some nervous diffi-
cutly. It is a good thing when
a left-handed child can learn
to use both hands equally
well.
One of my professors at
college used to go to the
blackboard and draw beauti
fully with both hands at the
same time. Parents should
never scold the child who
cannot learn to use his right
hand.
The world is full of fine
and able and highly intelli
gent people who are left-handed.
Some left-handed children
learn to use their right hand
for almost everything but
writing, or perhaps ball
throwing. Narcolepsy
A young woman writes -
very unhappy-to say people
make fun of her because she
goes to sleep anywhere and
everywhere. I assume that she
is not a fat, slowed-up, puffy-
faced person with almost nd
thyroid gland. I will assume
that her physician has ruled
out such a myxedema. Then
the probability is that she has
narcolepsy, in which case her
doctor may be able to keep
her awake with a dexedrlne
type of drug. He must watch
her because some few people
run the dose up and become
habituated.

I was just reading that the
U.S. Department of Health,
Education, and Welfare has
announced that it has started
to compile a list of the "diplo
ma mills" still running in this
country. They are a disgrace
to our civilization.
Already there are 30 of
these supposed schools listed.
For a price they will sell
what looks like a college de
gree. Usually all the man
needs to do when he wants
such a degree is to send the
$100 or whatever the crook
running the "school" asks for.
The "student" does not have
to attend any courses or take
and examination.
I can remember a time-
years ago-when my mother's
scrub woman bought an M.D.
degree for $25: and soon had
a good practice. Usually a
quack will buy a series of
these diplomas so that he can
put a string of intials after
his name.
Fortunately, today there
aren't many Slate Boards of
Medical Examiners who will
be taken in by these fake
diplomas.

thirds of today's motor trips
are of less than six miles,
according to studies made by
auto industry groups.
And it is this kind of driv
ing in which a car seldom
has a chance to warm up
properly, that is hardest on
the engine, most automotive
engineering experts agree.
They estimate that about
six pounds of water per gal
lon of gas is produced by an
engine operating below prop
er temperature.
Water, a byproduct of com
bustion, condenses on cylin
der walls and runs down into
the crankcase, where it di
lutes the oil. It also com
bines with gases of combus
tion, forming acids that at
tack critical parts of the en-
gine.
To avoid rapid engine wear
by diluted oil and the con
taminants oil circulates with
it through the car's engine,
the American Petroleum in
stitute recommends that mo
torists change oil every 30
days in winter, every 60 days
in summer and never exceed
2,000 miles without a change,
