Noted Medical Writer Dies
Chicago - IUPD - Dr. Herman
N.. Bundesen, 78, Chicago
health commissioner for 34
years and "family doctor" to
millions through his books
nd syndicated column, died
today of cancer.
Bundesen, a native of Ber
lin, .Germany, grew up . in
Chicago and built a career on
his often controversial but in
variably successful fight for
improved health standards in
the polyglot second largest
city in the nation.
He graduated from North
western University in Evan
ton in 1009 and served, with
a three-year break during the
late 1020's, as health commis
sioner from 1022 to April of
this year. He remained Board
of Health president until his
death.
Bundesen was a widely syn
dicated health columnist, was
a familiar radio voice and ad
vised generations of mothers
on baby care through his
books and pamphlets.
BURGLARS "HIRE" HELP
Massapequa, N. Y.-IUPIi-Two
burglars who entered a dis
count store Wednesday had
filled their duffle bags so full
of cameras, watches, jewelry
and other loot they couldn't
lift them, solved the problem
in short order.' They found
three cleanup men in another
part of the store, ordered them
to carry the loot to their
waiting automobile and fled.
Billy Graham Now
In Switzerland

evangelist Billy
Graham Wednesday night
opened his outdoor crusade In
Switzerland with a mass meel
ing here attended by a crowd
of 13,000.
Graham, who spoke with
the help of an interpreter,
conveyed the greetings of
American Christians to mem
bers of the community who
occupied only about 20 per
cent of the seals available
in the huge Bern Wankdorf
stadium.
Graham appealed to his au
dience to openly proclaim
faith in Jesus Christ. Approxi
mately 100 faithful answered
his call.
Council Protests
Three-Way Plan
For Compensation
Astoria - (UPD - The Clatsop
County Central Labor council
said Wednesday it would pro
test a proposed "three-way"
workmen's compensation
measure when the legislative
interim committee on labor
management relations meets
here Thursday and Friday.
Spokesmen for the labor
council said they objected to
a oroDosal that would allow
employees to choose among a :
state workmen's compensa
tion program, private insur
ance, or a non-state program.
The council said It objected
to the proposed measure be
cause injured workers not in
cluded in the state program
would lose their right of ap
peal to the courts.
The legislative committee
is scheduled to take up work
men's compensation during its
Thursday session. Discussion
of proposals in the field of
unfair labor practices is slated
for Friday.
Following its meetings, the
committee will draft its re
port to the 1961 legislature.

Showers and thunderstorms
in the Rocky Mountains and
north central United States
highlighted a rainy pattern to
day that extended from the
Washington coast to Florida.
Rapid City, S. D., reported
hail accompanying showers
from Colorado's northern
Rockies northeast to Alexan
dria, Minn. In Montana, rain
drenched MJreat Falls and
Butte. Aberdeen, S. D., meas
ured 1.03 inches In six hours
during the night and south
ward in Texas, Childress re
ceived 2.15 inches In the same
period.
Other showers fell along
the Texas-Oklahoma border
and the North Carolina coast.
Fog covered much of Wis
consin but elsewhere skies
were mostly clear with a sim
ilar pattern forecast today.
At Wichita, Kan., civic offi
cials directed clean-up oper
ations from a record nine
inch downpour during seven
hours early Wednesday. Flash
floods drove residents from
their homes in the hardest-hit
north side of town. Emergen
cy sanitation measures went
into effect when sewers overflowed.
Courier Launching
Set For October
Washington - (Science Serv
ice) -The' department of de
fense will probably attempt
to launch a second Courier
satellite in October. The first
Courier attempt was wrecked
Aug. 18 when its two-stage
rocket blew apart.
A spokesman for the De
partment of Defense said no
Courier is planned until at
least Oct, 1 and that the sec
ond Courier attempt will prob
ably be made very soon after
that date. He said it is un
likely that the present sched
ule can be significantly short
ened. The Courier to come, like
the one that failed, will con
tain equipment for relaying
voice and teletype signals. In
a five-minute pass over a re
ceiving station, Courier could
send and receive about 340,-.

MAP PEAR CHANGES
Corvallis, Ore. - (Science
Service) - Using radioactive
"tracers" that map chemical
action, Oregon State college
researchers here are trying to
determine how carbon dioxide
given off by pears during
storage causes the 'ruit core
to turn brown. Radioactive
carbon isotopes may be able
to trace the carbon dioxide
pattern of attack in the fruit.
So-called brown core in pears
has become a problem in re
cent years with the wide
spread use of sealed plastic
bags for storing pears through
the winter. The scaling slows
down respiration or oxidation
of the fruit and thus prolongs
Its life. The big problem is i
that the carbon dioxide builds
up in the bag. Pear packers
have solved the problem, in
part, by punching holes in the
plastic bags to permit some
escape of carbon dioxide, but
this shortens storage life of
pears by about one month.
