PERSHING MISSILE-Named in honor of General of Armies
John J. Pershing, the Pershing missile recently was suc
cessfully test fired from its new transporter-croctor-launcher.
The new type launcher will permit the Pershing to be
transported to an unprepared site, erected and fired in a
matter of minutes, according to the Army.
District 6C Schools
Will Open Sept. 12
Central Point Schools of
District 6C, which include
Sams Valley. Gold Hill, and
Central Point, wilr open Mon
day, Sept. 12, Superintendent
Charles A. Meyer announced
today.
School buses in all parts of
the district will operate the
first day on the same schedule
as last year, he said
Ail cafeterias except the
Central Point Junior High
school cafeteria will operate
the first day. The cafeteria in
Central Point Junior Hign
and Elementary school will
operate If completed. Mdyer
said construction is not yet
complete, but may be ready
for school opening.
He said insurance covering
any accidents to school chil
dren will be available for
$1.80 for children in grades
- one lo eight, and $2.50 for
for Crater High school stu
. dents.
Included in Insurance
Meyer said "it is doubtful
if there is any other insurance
of any kind that covers so
much at so small a cost." It
Includes a death benefit of
SI, 000; loss of both hands,
feet or sight, $1,000; and a
loss of one hand or foot or
sight of one eye, $500.
He noted that children are
covered to and from school
provided they are on direct
route between home and
- school.
George Johns will be prin
cipal of Central Point Junior
High and Elementary schools,
and Richard Traylor will be
vice principal. William Brew
ster is principal of Jewctt
school, and Robert Jobe will
be principal of Sams Valley
school. Arthur Straus is prin
cipal of Crater High school
and Ron Lamb will be vice
principal.
District 6C will have 113
teachers this year, Meyer said,
and 64 non-certificated per
sonnel. Meyer said thai If construc
tion at Jewett Elementary
school in Central Point is
completed, grade three will
be moved to the new rooms.
If construction Is not com
plete, grade three will be
housed in the Central Point
Junior High and Elementary
site, Meyer said. .
Fraternity Gives
Chapters 'Way Out'
Portland - IUPU - Delegates
to the national convention of
Sigma Nu fraternity Wednes
day approved an amendment
giving a "way out" for chap
ters facing a mandate to end
racial discrimination or "get
off the campus."
The controversial amend
ment, which passed by a
three-to-one vote, would allow
chapters facing closure be
cause of racial discrimination
to appeal to the fraternity's
high council for a waiver of
racial qualifications for members.
Navy Men Now
Can Carry Liquor
Aboard Ships
Washington-IUPD-Navy men
now can have a bottle in
every port. But the high seas
will remain the dry seas.
A new regulation permits
naval personnel to ca'ry
liquor aboard ships and
planes. But it must be kept
untouched under lock and key
until the men reach shore.
Naval officers said there al
ways had been a lot of "petty
cheating" on the old ban on
carrying liquor. The change in
regulations, announced Wed
nesday, puts the Navy in line
with the Air Force and Army.
The new regulation, how
ever, does not put the Navy
on the same footing as the
British navy which, from time
immemorial has allowed its
seafaring men to have a nog
gin of grog while aboard ship.
Under the new U.S. rule
naval personnel may carry a
gallon of alcholic beverages
aboard ships and aircraft.
They may not drink it until
they go ashore. While in trans
it it must be registered with
the commanding officer and
"stored in securely locked
compartments."
Jury Ponders About

Drury, charged with drunk
driving, said the odor of al
cohol came from hair tonic.
His barber testified that
Drury received a haircut and
tonic treatment at his shop
on the day of the arrest. He
said the hair tonic was 70 per
cent alcohol. But policemen
said in their opinion. Drury
was staggering when they ar
rested him.
The case ended in a mis
trial when the Jury gave up
after three hours of debating
the question.
"Old Sailing Ship
Now Tourist Draw

She is a 140-foot packet and
sailed the seas for many
years. Now, the ship serves as
a tourist attraction and houses
a gift shop.
Built in 1917 for $64,000.

Committee Watches
Fishing Operations
Astoria-flJPIi-Mcmbers of the
legislative interim committee
on natural resources were out
on the Columbia river near
here Wednesday to observe
commercial gillnet fishing
operations.
The committee was sched
ule to go out again today
for a first hand look at sports
fishing in the area.
Following its observations
the committee planned to com
plete drafting its natural re
sources report for the 1961
legislature.
Woman Named To
Head Nixon Group
PortlandlPtUMrs. Collis P.
Moore of Moro has been ap
pointed vice-chairman of the
Oregon Nixon - for President
committee in the Second con
gressional district. State Sen.
Anthony Yturri, chairman of
the committee, announced
Wednesday.
Yturri said Mrs. Moore
would be in charge of the
Nixon activities in 18 Oregon
counties, including Baker,
Cook, Deschutes. Gilliam,
Grant, Harney, Hood River,
Jefferson. Klamath. Lake,
Malheur, Morrow, Sherman,
Umatilla, Union, Wallowa,
Wasco, and Wheeler.
Mrs. Moore is Republican
national committeewomin for
Oregon.
