September will find America
has tightened its educational
belt by adding more classroom
hours, emphasizing foreign
languages, mathematics and
science, and generally expect
ing more from the 20th cen
tury pupil.
A country-wide survey by
the National Education as
sociation showed television is
adding hours to a student's
day with 7:30 a.m. classes in
Miami; French and Spanish is
being taught in Beverly Hills,
Calif., elementary schools,
and a science laboratory will
be open Saturdays in San
Francisco.

nominated by his duck-hunting
friends received word
Tuesday that certification of
his nomination has been with
drawn. John D. Weldon, county
registrar of elections, said he
had withdrawn certification
of the nomination of Hugh V.
Lacey Jr., on the advice of the
state attorney general and
secretary of state.
Lacey's nomination for Re
publican candidate for coun
ty coroner was based on 86
write-in votes he received in
the primary election. Most of
the votes came from members
of Lacey's duck-hunting club.
John Sabln, chairman of the
group backing Lacey, said the
group would now try to obtain
a nomination for Lacy from
the Republican County Cen
tral Committee which meets
Friday. ;
Lacey said he was wailing
for the county registrar's deci
sion concerning the eligibility
of Dr. Ernest J. Losli as an
Independent candidate for
coroner.
Lacey's supporters have sug
gested Dr. Losli may be vio
lating the Hatch Act, which
prohibits federal employes
from political campaigning.
Dr. Loall said, however, he
signed retirement papers Aug.
17 from his pathologist's job at
the Veterans Administration
hospital here. He said the re
tirement would become effec
tive Aug. 31.

level courses in Erie, Fa., High
schools. Advanced physics
and electronics laboratories
in Oakland, Calif., will be
open to talented high school
upper classmen.
Students aren't the only
ones faced with stiffer stand
ards, the association said.
Teachers will be coming un
der pressure, also.
Westport, Conn., teachers
will be faced with a new pro
gram to evaluate their pro
fessional competence. They
will first judge themselves,
and then face their principal's
decision on how good they
are.
Detroit has scheduled 16
half-hour television shows for
elementary teachers while in
Buffalo all teachers must at
tend meetings designed to im
prove their instructing tech
niques. Two innovations were re
ported by the NEA in the
survey. Elizabeth, N.J.,
schools will be trying to cover
in six years what is taught
normally in eight years in
arithmetic. The new system
is to teach arithmetic by logi
cal concepts rather than by
rote memorization.
In the newest state, Hawaii,
five specialists will teach
Chinese, Japanese and Hindi
to teachers and pupils togeth
er in the same classroom.

California Youth
Arrested by Police
A 17-year-old California
youth who was hitchiking
through Jackson county with
a suitcase full of explosives
was picked up by state police
near Ashland and turned over
to juvenile authorities here,
police reported.
State police said they dis
covered 10 slicks of dynamite
and 10 electric blasting caps
In the boy's suitcase when ap
prehended yesterday. The caps
can be set off by turning on
a radio transmitter, state po
lice noted.
