Mental Disease In Europe
At the recent conference
of the World Health Organi
zation held in Finland it was
said that in Europe 2,000,000
people are now confined in
mental hospitals. Half of these
have schizophrenia.
One of the two most com
mon causes of a worker's 'ab
sence from his or her Job is a
nervous trouble of some kind.
The delegates emphasized the
need for better treatment of
neuroses and psychoses inside
and outside of hospitals, so
that the patients can be sent
back to work more quickly.
Ihere is a great need for
educational facilities for hand
icapped children, so that some
of them can be taught to do
some useful work. There is
great need also for the earlier
recognition of mental Illness.
Not only do family doctors
need to learn to recognize be
ginning insanity, but so also
do the several specialists, and
especially surgeons; also,
school teachers, social work-

State Howell Appling Jr. said
Monday he was asking Attor
ney General Robert Y. Thorn,
ton for an opinion on whether
statutory authority existed to
remove from the ballot the
name of a candidate for Mult
nomah County District judge.
Appling said Leonard .
Alley, presiding officer at a
nominating c o n v e n Hon in
Portland for Clifford E. Nel
son, came to his office and
asked that an affidavit which
he had signed concerning the
meeting be withdrawn.
Alley said "I now find to
my satisfaction that the affi
davit I made In support of the
certificate in identifying the
electors present at this meet
ing was made in truly justifi
able error, all other proceed
ings in which I participated,
however, being made, in my
opinion, In conformity with
the statutes."
The convention was held in
the Portland armory June 16.
Appling said of the first 12
persons he Interviewed all de
clared they were not attend
ing the convention.
Appling said whether Nel
son's name would be removed
from the ballot would depend
on an opinion from Thornton
unless Nelson decided to with
draw. Nelson said in Portland
he had received no official
word from the secretary of
state's office and was not pre
pared to say whether he
would withdraw. "I have no
occasion, or no cause, to hide
anyining wnere Wis is con-
corned," he said.

said Tuesday he has declined
to serve as a member of the
GOP State Central Commit
tee's Executive committee.
Paget said "My duties is

ceived a list of the executive

this was "the first notice that

ly disturbed. Today, when a
man is going Insane, his fam
ily, because of their shame
and their reluctance to have
the neighbors know of their
plight, often keep the man
away from a psychiatrist and
a mental hospital. They keep
asking doctors to put the man
through one complete (and
useless) examination after
another, and when a surgeon
suggests an ' operation, they
are all for it; they are so
anxious to find a cause for
the disease - below the neck.
Heart Patients Need
Some Activity
During recent years a num
ber of able heart specialists
have produced evidence to
show that the man who has
just recovered from the shock
of a heart attack is likely to
do better sitting in a chair
than lying in bed; and soon he
will do better If he is made to
walk about a bit.
Recently, Drs. M. C. Beck
er, J. G. Kaufman, and Wayne
Vasey urged all persons who
have recovered well from a
heart attack to go back to
supporting themselves again.
The doctors believe this is
better for the man, and It cer
tainly will be better for our
national economy.
As they say, there are 10
million Americans now trou
bled with heart disease, or the
old scar of a heart attack, and
if all these persons are to be
refused the right to work, a
staggering economic burden is
going to be placed on the rest
of us. Wives have to stop
saying to a well - recovered
husband, "Don't walk," or
"Don't carry that brief case";
and employment managers
must be taught that, accord
ing to many statistics, a man
who has made a perfect re
covery from a heart attack
has a good chance of living
for another 10 years. As long
as he can turn out a good
day's work, he should be al
lowed to keep at his job.

Finds Formula
For Killing Fleas
Corvallis (UPD An Oregon
State college scientist says
what may be dog's best
friend is a new formula which
will leave dogs flea-free.
Dr. R. L. Goulding has con
cocted a chemical treatment
for dog food that wipes out
fleas, but apparently has no
harmful effect on dogs.
The flea killer resulted as
an offshot of Dr. Goulding's
work as an Agricultural Ex
periment Station entomologist
working on chemicals to con
trol insects that bite cattle.
But light dosages of the
chemically treated food were
given dogs. The pooches were
exposed to fleas all carefully
counted and a recount at the
end of the trial found 85 to 95
per cent of the fleas dead.
Further proof that every
dog has his day came as a bo
nus affect of the treatment.
Veterinarians discovered that
the chemicals sharply reduced
stomach worms in the dogs.
Goulding emphasized that
his findings are only prelimi
nary. Many angles need inves
tigating by researchers ana
dog food producers before a
flea proofing palatable dog
food could be marketed.
The doctor said, too, there
are deeper inplications to the
findings. Most rodents carry
fleas of various types which
are infected with disease. A
flea toxicant could give scien
tists a tool for their world
wide fight against plagues and
diseases spread by rodents.

senator and highway commis
sioner, died Monday of a heart
attack.
