Freight Agent
For Medford
.- A. E. Armstrong Jr. as
sumed duties as freight agent
for the Southern Pacific com
pany at Medford last week.
This position was formerly
held by C. B. Stevens who
died in June.
Armstrong started with the
Southern Pacific company as
a telegrapher on the Portland
division in 1948 shortly after
leaving his home state of
Kansas. He was employed as
agent at Mill City, Brooks,
North Bend and Coos Bay,
where he served until his ar
rival at Medford. He was also
one of the Oregon agents,
chosen by the management, to
attend a series of programs
outlining specialised opera
tions which were held in San
Francisco.
Armstrong served 2V4 years
with the U. S. Navy during
World War II and, since his
discharge, has participated in
various American Legion ac-

Dent Mowrey, 72,
died here Saturday.
Mowrey, who was born in
New York City, came to Port
land in the late 1920s. He was I
educated in France and was
a graduate ot Leipzig Con
servatory of Music in Ger
many. The most recent of his pub
lished compositions were
"Festival" and "Scherzo In
Double Notes."

King of the Vegetables
Ii the Common Potato
The real Horatio Alger of
the entire plant kingdom
would seem to be the common
potato.
No other member of the
plant world has ever equalled
the phenomenal growth in
edibility of this plant known
as the white potato. Of all
vegetables few, if any, equals
it for universal appeal, rea
sonableness in price and
availability. Mr. Potato is
about as important as a vege
table can be.
It is really not Irish at all,
unless it is called that because
of the extensiveness of Its
acreage in Ireland, or the fact
It furnishes the bulk of the
food for the Irish people. Ac
tually, the white potato had
its origin In Peru, It was cul
tivated for food and was
called the "Apple of Peru."
A Spaniard by the name
of Pedro de Leon shipped
many bushles of the fleshy
tubers to Spain sometime in
the 16th century, from which
point the potato spread to all
of Europe and to Ireland. And
all this happened about a hun
dred years after a venture
some sailor by the name of
Columbus sailed for what we
are now proud to call
America.
In New World
Some early settlers to the
New World brought some
I seed potatoes, sometime
around 1720, and the first po
tato patch was planted some
where In the state of New
Hampshire. The popularity
of the potato was as rapid in
the new world as was its
adoption In the gardens of
Europe and every pioneer
garden had potatoes, grow-
ini! alongside tne jnaian
maize. The potato, along with
the abundance of wild game,
fed the early Americans and
made possible an America
such as we have today.
This prolific vegetable prac
tically saved the German peo
ple from starvation during
two world wars, and prob
ably ranks, even today, a:
one of the principal foods of
Germany, Ireland and most
of the Balkan countries.
The white potato belongs
to the family of plants known
as the Nightshades, related
to the tomato, eggplant, and
even tobacco, in tne outer
skin of the potato Is a mild
alkaloid poison, which close
ly resembles nicotine that Is
a part of tobacco; its libera
tion during cooking is wnai
gives the characteristic, and
sometimes very pronounced
odor, usually noticed when
potatoes "are cooked with
their Jackets on."
Deficient in Fats
Potatoes are deficient In
fats, but very high in starch, !
and water content; for this
reason they are avoided by
many people who fear over
weight; but in spite of a mild
boycott by dietists and port
ly folks, the lowly potato is
easily recognized as the most
popular vegetable in the en
tire world, and that covers a
whale of a lot of territory.
It probably would be con
servative to say that the over
whelming majority of Ameri
cans eat potatoes at least
twice a day, year in and year
out; which accounts for a tre
mendous tonnage of potatoes.
The annual crop in trie
United States alone Is some
where near, or perhaps over,
the billion bushel mark,
which certainly couldn't be
considered "small potatoes."
And this vegetable has ac
complished all this In a com
paratively short time.
